Dave and/or Susan,

An attorney colleague of mine has a son who suffers from a disease which
requires him to take human growth hormone.  He has to take the hormone
or serious health concerns can occur, i.e. lapse into coma,
underdevelopment of internal organs, etc.

 

He travels several times a year to New York to see a specialist in New
York City (there are very few in specialists in the country).  He
recently fought a battle with the U.S. Congress on an attempt to
regulate these hormones which would make it almost impossible to obtain
for his child.  This all comes about from the baseball
steroids/professional sports steroids scandals.  This is a knee jerk
reaction from politicians attempting to make it look like they are doing
something to curb the abuse of hormones in professional sports.  The
problem is that the majority of the abuse (some statistics say over 90%)
comes from hormones which are through the black market, not the normal
lines of receipt, i.e. pharmacies.  

 

He and the foundation he works through were successful.  But now he just
discovered a few days ago that the Governor of New York is pushing a
similar bill through a State Senator named Duane out of Manhattan on
this same issue.  It is moving very quickly through the State
legislature.  They are trying to regulate this in same manner.  The
Governor is using as support a figure from Brooklyn Pharmacy of $30
million dollars worth of this drug which was purportedly dispensed in
one year.  It is hard to believe this is accurate if the Pharmacy were
following laws already in place (and likely not enforced!).  

 

Basically I was wondering if you know someone in New York State who
happens to have a child who relies upon human growth hormones for a
condition or illness who may be unaware this is happening up there and
is willing to write a letter to Mayor Bloomberg.  Larry has a way into
that office which he wants to take advantage of.  Larry already has a
letter which he has used to do this in the past.  But b/c Larry is a
citizen of Florida, it doesn't hold any weight!  Larry is trying to work
through his son's doctor in New York.  Unfortunately, the doctor is
holding out hope on a lobbyist that helped with the U.S. Congress fight
in the past.  But Larry doesn't want to wait b/c he doesn't have a lot
of faith in that lobbyist!  

 

I would appreciate any help!
