Gowanus Canal

On Mother’s Day, we visited the Gowanus Canal.
After dinner nearby, we took a walk to the canal, which was declared a Superfund Site in 2009 due to its pollution, toxicity and unique smell.
Clean-up began in 2013. Environmentalists took interest and persisted. Development followed with new residential buildings and walkways along the canal. It’s now called a “waterfront”.
As I gazed upon the water, it occurred to me that, although I wouldn’t swim in it now, someday it might be possible.
Just then two ducks came swimming up the canal — as if to say “the water’s fine !!”
It takes time and effort to clean up but it’s worth it. Just ask the ducks.
