Dove Nest

The weather has been beautiful down south with warm days and cooler nights. You can open the windows before going to bed, something that bothers my wife, but I still sneak open the bathroom window in our bedroom. In Florida, that usually only lasts a couple of months during the year. So it's a special time for me.

Baseball is back. The green leaves are sprouting after a particularly cold winter where rarely seen below freezing temps killed or damaged many plants down here. I spent last weekend cutting all the brown, dead leaves and branches out and it is refreshing to see the new growth coming back in most cases.

Another sign of the life is that a beautiful dove couple decided to build a nest in an elephant shaped planter that sits atop one of our Tiki totem poles. Normally we don’t like birds congregating on them as their mess destroys the wood. But when we saw the mama sitting quietly and not moving much in the pot, further analysis was necessary. We discovered the one egg when she left the nest. Then a day later there was another egg. Proud mamma sits on those eggs throughout the day and night. She sits completely still if anyone goes near it. We are very excited to see the babies hatch, likely in the next week or so (two weeks is usual for doves).

So life continues in the world and seeing outside our front window is exciting in many ways. What’s your favorite spring ritual?
