The Cinema Arts Centre, an independent film venue in Huntington, is one of our favorite places. When we were there over the weekend, I noticed a fascinating commonality among the three movies that were being shown. They all had to do with old age.

"Quartet" is a glimpse into the lives of four former stars of the opera who live in a retirement home for opera singers and come together to reclaim their past glory. "Amour", which is nominated for five Academy awards, is the story of a devoted and loving elderly couple dealing with the cruelty of old age. "Stand Up Guys" reunites three retired gangsters for one last job.

Only a few years ago, I remember reading that there were no performance possibilities for older actors. The focus was on youth. Yet these three movies all feature mature and well-seasoned actors who have long and distinguished resumes to their credit.
