Childhood Treats
Posted By : Rona Gura

I was in a bakery last week when a sign on the display caught my eye. The sign read  “Swiss Rolls.” Looking at that sign immediately brought me back to my parents’ house and into their kitchen. Swiss Rolls were one of my favorite childhood treats. Although my mom never bought them from a baker; our Swiss Roles came in a Drakes Cake wrapper.

Our Very Own Honoree

Friday night was a special night for Gotham.  It was the 21st Annual Theresa Awards Dinner.  The Theresa Alessandra Russo Foundation is a not for profit that honors the memory of Theresa Alessandra Russo by touching the lives of children with special needs and their families.  Theresa, who would have been 29 years old on Friday, was born with a rar

A somewhat meaningful number these days. While Fred was being honored last night, A-Rod smacked his 660th homer last night at Fenway park tying Willie Mays for fourth on the all time list. His laser shot snapped a 2-2 tie and proved to be the winning run. Now the controversy will smolder as the Yankee organization refuses to pay him a $6 million do

Theresa Honor

Tonight I will be honored by the Russo family Theresa Foundation. In the run-up to the event I've  spent a lot of time thinking about what I'm going to say and am mindful of my son Alex's comments that my blogs and other utterances should have a serious impact and not be frivolous. In my comments I plan to  thank Gotham as a whole and many indiv

The Faded Stamp
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

We've all been subjected to it. That stamp on the back of your hand that guarantees re-admission to an event. Once stamped, have you ever had the lingering question of what if the stamp fades? We were in Washington visiting Mea and went to a craft show. Paid our admission, entered and stamped. Later in the day, after leaving and re-entering once

ER or How I spent a lovely Spring Evening

She was walking to work and fell in a pothole. Corey, who do we go after for this? So now we're in the ER, waiting for X-ray results or maybe some pain meds. At least we're not in Nepal. Or Baltimore. Acts of injustice done between the setting and the rising sun in history lie like bones, each one. -W H Auden

Still Cranky After All This Time
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Last week I was cranky (see last week's blog post). I am still cranky. Last last week, my son shared his flulike cold with me. Some things are not meant to be shared. I went back to work yesterday with some coughing and sneezing still going on. Shortly after getting seated on the LIRR, I had a profound realization. I was that person other commute

Jenner's Journey
Posted By : Rona Gura

One could not go on the internet in the past week or turn on a television without seeing or hearing Bruce Jenner’s name. To me, he always has been that incredibly handsome athlete who captured America’s hearts when he won the gold medal at the 1976 Olympic decathlon and became the “best athlete in the world.” To my daughter’s generation, however, h

The Attic

As we finish unpacking in our new home, one of the last decision to be made is where to put our framed photographs.  We have limited space for pictures of us, vacations, our weddings, our parents, children, and now grandchildren.  Carefully we pick and chose which to display.  Those not chosen get packed in a box that is taped up and sent to the ob

Is golf a sport?

Golf in the United States is a $76 billion annual industry with about 25 million players. Thirty-eight percent of Americans call themselves golf fans. Proponents say that golf meets the definition of "sport" found in the dictionary, requires physical exertion and coordination, and is recognized as a sport by sporting goods companies, athletic assoc

Old Friends

We traveled last weekend to the Berkshires to stay with old friends. It was our first visit in two years. So we had a lot of catching up to do. One of our friends' tongue in cheek "House Rules" is "Gossiping is encouraged, during your entire stay". Well, lots has happened in that 2 year interval and boy did we gossip. I must admit I love to gos

Last Sunday I attended the annual Holocaust Commemoration at Temple Emanu-El. As in recent years, for me the ceremony accentuates the fact that the number of survivors is decreasing every year. My Mother lights one of the thirty-six memorial candles and, unfortunately, there were not enough survivors to light them all. As I listened to the stories

Earth Day!

According to earthday.org: Each year, Earth Day -- April 22 -- marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The height of hippie and flower-child culture in the United States, 1970 brought the death of Jimi Hendrix, the last Beatles album, and Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water

Cranky
Posted By : Nancy Schess

That’s me! I had a bad week last week. Did you ever have one of those weeks where every time you turned around there was another crisis to avert? That was my week. Happily, this week has started out better but I am still suffering from lingering cranky. Any suggestions for how to relieve the stress? How do you get yourself out of a cranky
