Commercials
Posted By : Fred Klein

Call me old fashioned, but I much prefer my Television viewing with commercial interruptions. Not because I want to be pitched, but because I want (need) to rush into the bathroom and brush my teeth and do other things. On the other hand, viewing cable shows clear through upsets my ingrained habits, if not my circadian rhythm, and everything else.

Kickstarting Hillary
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

When it comes to social media, I am delayed. A few weeks ago, I would have said that I don't do social media. My change to “delayed” status reflects my recent experience with Kickstarter. I had heard of Kickstarter, but until our children, Alyssa and Jason, put their new project on Kickstarter, I had never visited the site...nor had much inclin

Choose Your Battles
Posted By : Cayce Crown

It's not often that a Pacifist can support a battle, but on Sunday that all changed. If you were fortunate enough to be at The Knitting Factory, you heard a battle that would soothe the savage breast. Different genres, different ages, different colors, different orientations, different sexes and that's just the bands, you should have seen the crow

It's Jeopardy!
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Jeopardy has been in my life since 1991. Truth be told, I had never been the biggest fan (and I never liked Alex Trebek). From the time I met my husband, however, 7 pm became hallowed time – the time when the television would go on and we would compete in the categories of the day. Jeopardy was and continues to be his game of choice. As the years

Sunday Dinner
Posted By : Rona Gura

“Sunday dinner” means different things to different families. To my family, during the winter, it  generally means ordering in from our favorite Italian restaurant. During the summer, it means watching my husband cook our dinner on the bar-b-que. Given all of our busy schedules, it is one of the only days during the week that we sit down and eat di

Very Important Office Desk Things
Posted By : Donald Bernstein

I proudly display all sorts of objects on my desk that my kids made when they were little.  I have a ceramic pencil holder that Max made and a small little ceramic bowl that I use to hold paper clips.   From Hilary I have a great paperweight with my initials on it in squiggly wormy letters.  I have used it for many years.   Josh made me something.

Richie Furay's Dream

First off a get well wish to regular Saturday blogger, our friend Mitch Tobol, who some of us fondly call by his nom de pen, webmaster.  A bit under the weather, we wish him to get well.  I am honored to be called in to pinch-blog.  Here goes: Not much of a secret around Gotham when it comes to my fondness towards a certain band's music, and weari

The following is from last year and it warrants repetition:   If you drive you play it   Salt and plows make it   Tires and suspensions hate it   How many more weeks to evade it?

Shut It Off
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

As we settled into our seats at the theater, I opened the Playbill and read the insert asking that I shut off my cell phone. The request went beyond the usual reminder to “silence” the device. “PLEASE...turn off your cell phones...” the insert implored, followed by an explanation of how even silenced phones interfered with the theater’s sound syste

Birthdays
Posted By : Cayce Crown

You know what they say about birthdays, right? Sure beats the alternative. It’s certainly a mixed blessing, especially once you’ve reached “a certain age.” One day nearer the end, but the end could be another 50 - 60 years away… What do get for someone who doesn’t necessarily “have everything,” but doesn’t want anything? My sweetheart of 27+ year

A Favorite

We are all creatures of habit. I am about to divulge a fact about myself that few people know. When I am alone in the car I sing – loudly. And, I am partial to one particular song – Born in the USA. To be honest, I’m not sure why this song calls me when I am driving. Maybe it brings me back to high school when my group of friends would sing th

My Missing Software
Posted By : Rona Gura

I recently read an interesting article about facial recognition software. The article defined facial recognition software as “a computer application which automatically identifies or verifies a person’s identity.” When reading the article I realized that I, unlike many computers, have no internal facial recognition software. I can be introduced to

Pi, Anyone?
Posted By : Mitch Tobol

Today is Pi Day because the date spells the first three digits (3.14) of pi, or π, the mathematical constant that represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. This year, the event is even more special because, for the first time in a century, the date will represent the first five digits of pi: 3.14.15.   Do you celebrate pi da

Princess Summerfall WINTERspring
Posted By : Fred Klein

Are you old enough to have seen early television's iconic children's program "Howdy Doody" (puppet) show?  If you are,  you may remember Princess Summerfall Winterspring. She was Native American and a good girl. Of course, her name was a play on our lauded 4 season northern weather. Well, my favorite number is 3 and I'm advocating a royal name chan

It's Melting ?
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

So the question is whether the snow will melt before we are accustomed to the fact that it is now dark in the morning when we get up. I apologize to those who may live in parts where the snow was trucked out of sight long ago but some of us are left to endure the mounds of snow -- some natural and some the result of clearing and piling. (When will
