Writing

We recently went to the gift show (Shoppe Object) on the never-ending search for Refined Finds. What surprised me was the number of vendors offering writing supplies and encouraging writing. Notebooks, papers, cards, pens and pencils. All dedicated to getting thoughts from the mind through the arm, hand and fingers to whomever. Whether for introspec

Traveling Fears in the face...
Posted By : Crysti Farra

I am struck with more than the usual traveling fears.  My fears normally center around my clients being taken care of? Missing a deadline while out of the office for an extended time. Are my employees overworked trying to cover for me?  How is my 100.9 year old mother-in-law going to fare while we are gone?  The normal white noise that all self emp

Congrats to the Dinner Group!
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Last night I attended Gotham’s Dinner Group meeting at Bobby Van’s.  The one word that comes to mind is – wow.   The room was literally packed with more than 25 members and guests there for the same reason – to make new friends, help one another and make good connections along the way. As everyone took their turn around the table, I kept thinking –

Prequels and Sequels
Posted By : Rona Gura

Entertainment, to me, has recently been dominated by an onslaught of prequels and sequels. “Young Sheldon,” the prequel to “The Big Bang Theory,” just ended it’s run. There is currently, “And Just Like That,” the sequel to “Sex and The City,” and “The House of Dragons,” the prequel to “Game of Thrones.”   While the prequel/sequel phenomena seem

Fishing the Dog Days
Posted By : Joshua Zinder

In the dog days of summer, I went to Montana to fish in the Madison, Yellowstone, and Beaverhead rivers. On the third day of amazing fishing my guide helped me hit the Montana Grand Slam and caught all 4 species in the Yellowstone watershed Whitefish, Rainbow trout, my first ever Cutthroat trout, and my personal best Brown trout.  All in the longes

Rubber roads
Posted By : Mitch Tobol

Over the last couple of weekends I've been traveling the highways and backroads of NY. It's quite enjoyable on the back roads, passing farms of corn and soybeans in different stages of growth, the big swoops of numerous windmills, and the cows and animals serving our population.   However, on the highways, the amount of pieces of tires is astonishi

COVID 2024
Posted By : Fred Klein

I am presently recovering from my second, lifetime, case of Covid and the unpleasant experience warrants a cautionary blog.  Last Wednesday night, after burning the candle at both ends for too long, I ventured into the city for our annual rooftop (thank you Sylvie) New York Health & Aging Summer meeting.  I hitched a ride with Ben Geizhals alon

Watching ?
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

Are you watching? With all due respect to Roger (and any other world-class swimmer Gothamites) I’m not sure that I would ever turn on the TV to watch swimming (or archery). But here we are for the every four year spectacular — the Olympics. With all the human interest and a small dose of national pride, I watch and, sometimes, cheer.

Time for a Check up
Posted By : Daniel Schwartz

Rona’s blog last week inspired me to write this today. She spoke about getting checked up at her doctor for a skin issue that likely prevented something from getting worse. As I get older, I am very conscious of how the body becomes less resilient and more susceptible to the rigors of age and the environment we live in. I have been fighting blood p

An Alarm Reaction
Posted By : Nancy Schess

When my alarm rings off in the morning, I stir.   I am not a quick riser.  I need multiple taps of the snooze button before it is time to really get the day started.  Even then, I like my slow move, spending a little time reading, catching up on news, legal and otherwise – and admittedly, a little social media tour.    When it is time to actually

It Is Not Always What is Said
Posted By : Rona Gura

During a telephone conversation with my sister this week I mentioned that I still had no idea as to what my blog topic would be. Her children are younger than mine and she asked me whether I ever had blogged about social media and its effects on kids.  I told her of course I had.   In continuing our conversation, I came back to her social media sug

Subway Series reprise

It was not an official Gotham gathering -- as the case when many of us gathered at Citi Field last month -- when I found my way to Yankee Stadium last week; that said my "visit" to second game at the Yankees' home park was made possible via Gotham.  My brother Robby, who was for a memorial service for his mom last month, attended our Citi Field gat

T-shirts. The unmistakeable sign of an attitude. What attitude that might be is up to the wearer and for us to guess.   Some throw one on without any thought as to what it says or what it means, while others carefully pick one out that fits the statement they want to make.    In my ad hoc poll, most T-shirt wearers are conscious about the statement

Cynical?
Posted By : Fred Klein

Ever since the "Third rate" Watergate burglary, I have reserved judgement and operate on a "Nothing is as it appears" (or as they tell us) basis.  Does that make me a cynic?  You tell me.  My mind set is that "Up is Down and Down is Up" and what was once bad is now often good (and the reverse). Am I prone to believing conspiracy theories?  I know,

Masks

Having recently been exposed to Covid, and with the protocols having rescinded into memory, I was left to my own devices.I pulled out the box of N-95s and wore one when I walked around the office or when in a room with others. When alone in my office I closed the door and the mask came off.People may have looked at me strangely, and when asked, I re
