The Beard
Posted By : Donald Bernstein

Throughout history there have been periods when facial hair was in, and times when it was out. More recently, in the late 19th century, long beards were the thing. Then the beards were shaved and during the turn of the century a mustache was the fad. Now it seems that a one week growth is popular among some. I have my own cycles. Typically

The End.
Posted By : Donald Bernstein

This is my last blog.   I am continually frustrated when I write something and go to post and it is not there or gets deleted.  Oddly, it happens to the blogs that I think are the best and is infinitely frustrating.  My attemped post for today, in which I was paying homage to my parents on my 60th birthday, magically disappeared two times.  This ha

BOO!

Having nothing to do one afternoon, my son Max and I went to see Annabelle.  I have always been a fan of horror movies.  There are basically three kinds.  Monster movies, movies where young people are ripped or shredded to pieces, or movies about demons and the devil.  For me that last catergory is by far the scariest. Just the other night I was

"Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile."   He's Gone -The Grateful Dead   It was a mild winter afternoon on December 22, 1992 when my secretary buzzed me and said there was a detective from Boca Raton, Florida on the telephone.  I was confused.  I thought it might be a PBA solicitation and hesitated, but then took the call.   The detective as

Napping

There are nappers and non-nappers.  For me, napping is one of the great pleasures and typically it is part of my weekend, each day.  From what I have read, a nap is good for your health.   Most mammals nap throught the day.  We are the only ones with two periods during our twenty four hours, one being awake and the other for sleep.  I prefer to be

No Time to Lose

As my sixtieth birthday creeps closer, my mind drifts to thoughts of catastrophic illness and death.  It is not the first time.  I once had a crush on Janice Zloto.  She had a crush on my best friend.  I wanted to die.  But I was only in sixth grade.   Five years ago I thought I was having a heart attack and spent the night in a hospital, but it tu

Manster
Posted By : Donald Bernstein

Eve is spotting an irritation on her shoulder, close to her neck.  She asked me to look at it.   I am not a doctor, and there is not much I can say, but I am checking carefully to make sure it does not morph into a Manster.   Do you remember that 1959 horror movie?  It is about an American journalist who travels to Japan to inteview Dr. Suzuki who

The Deal
Posted By : Donald Bernstein

We are skiing out west this week, a sport exhausting and exhilarating.  The key is to limit the exhausting part.  For this Eve and I have a deal.   I carry her skis for her when we start and finish the day and after lunch and hot chocolate breaks.  And she picks out my clothes each morning and night and has them all ready for me on the bed.    Thi

Ailments of an Almost 60 Year Old
Posted By : Donald Bernstein

As a younger man, ailments were nothing more than ailments, something to see a doctor about and treated without much fanfare.   Closing in on 60 however seems to have created a more gloomy perspective.   Now aches and pains appear to surely be the result of something fatal.  The hacking and choking cough and chest tightness I suffered in August led
