[Fredslist] Another reason Gotham is great

I always say that Gotham provides opportunities. Yes, some are
opportunities to receive or refer business, but there's so much more. Last
night was one example of this.

By the way, Paul asked me to write this up for FredsList. How could I
refuse Paul?

So it started with Nancy's Tuesday blogpost a month and a half ago, about
her favorite wine. She likes the sweetest one available (e.g., a Moscato).
She decided that she needed to expand her taste, and asked commenters to
recommend something new for her to try. Nancy and I had been discussing
trying to broaden her wine horizons, for a while.

Several people commented on her blog, including Paul Napolitano (who knows a
ton and a half about wine, among other things), Rona Gura (who's been
Nancy's "sweet wine partner" for years), and myself (a collector, although
perhaps not quite as avid as Paul). Paul suggested a "Nancy Wine Dinner,"
and both Rona and I jumped on that idea. Paul and I agreed to bring the
wines, and the arrangements were made.

Last night, four couples (Nancy and Bill, Paul and Victoria, Rona and Phil,
and Daryle and I) plus Paul's son Justin (heading into senior year at
Alabama) gathered at 6:30 p.m. at The Orient, in Bethpage. Wait, a Chinese
restaurant for a wine-tasting dinner - does that make sense? Yep, it works,
for an all-white wine array. And although individual tastes can differ, a
substantial majority liked each of the wines. And the consensus was that
the food at The Orient was excellent, as was the service.

Nine people was just about the maximum size group for which this can work
well, I think, partly because with that number, each person can have a
decent taste of each wine, and we didn't have to bring two bottles of each
selection. (By the way, there was a wine tasting receptacle/spittoon/dump
bucket in the middle of the table so participants could spill out any
unwanted portion of a wine, and thus save their palate and blood alcohol
level for the next bottle. It was emptied and recycled by the waitstaff
several times throughout the evening.)

I brought five bottles (listed in the order we tasted them): Riondo Prosecco
(NV); Ken Forrester Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc 2016; Pazo de Barrantes
Albarino 2014; Catena Chardonnay 2015; and after Paul's selections, we
closed with my Chateau Rieussec Sauternes 1988 (Sauternes, a substantial
dessert wine, is one white wine in particular that ages extremely well, and
isn't ready to drink until it has darkened from its initial yellow straw
color to an amber color, which takes 10 - 15 years at a minimum). Paul
brought four perfectly aged bottles (yes, again, age is good for certain
white wines, if cellared properly): 2001 Maximin Grunhauser Kabinett; 2001
Von Simmern Kabinett; 2001 Maximin Grunhauser Spatelese; and 1996 Domaine
des Baumard Quarts de Chaume, which was the Wine Spectator Dessert Wine of
the Year).

We talked a bit about wine, a lot about our respective kids,
and.well.ummmm.what happens at The Orient, stays at The Orient..

You don't have to be a wine expert to set up your own wine-tasting dinner.
All you need is a handful or so of great Gotham colleagues and friends to
share it with you.

I can't wait for our red wine dinner six months hence.

Best,

David
