The most significant July 4th historical coincidence is the death of both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams within 5 hours of each other on July 4th, 1826, 50 years to the day from the signing of the Declaration. They were the last two surviving founding fathers. Originally fellow patriots, later bitter enemies and, finally, in the last 15 years of their lives, reunited as friends (by their now famous letters to each other). In the weeks prior to his death Jefferson wished only to survive until July 4th. His last words were "Is it the 4th"? On his deathbed Adams last words were to the effect that the country still had Jefferson. Unbeknownst to him Jefferson had died five hours earlier.

On a more mundane level George Steinbrenner was born on July 4th.
