Winter Sleep
Opens Dec. 19th at Angelika Film Center
18 West Houston St.
Winner of this year’s Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and Turkey’s Official Selection for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, Winter Sleep” tunnels into the everyday existence of a middle-aged former actor turned comfortably situated hotel owner — and emerges with a multifaceted study of human frailty whose moral implications resonate far beyond its remote Turkish setting. Melisa Sozen simply mesmerizes. The actress lays bare the essence of a beautiful, intelligent, passionate young woman who gave up nearly everything she cared about in order to take a husband many decades her senior, and who resents his interference with one of the few opportunities for personal fulfillment she still has available to her. Winter Sleep is a richly engrossing and ravishingly beautiful magnum opus. Cultural Arts

Henri Matisse: The Cutouts
Dec. 1st-Dec. 31st at The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)
11 W. 53rd St.
In the late 1940s, Henri Matisse turned almost exclusively to cut paper as his primary medium, and scissors as his chief implement, introducing a radically new operation that came to be called a cutout. Matisse would cut painted sheets into forms of varying shapes and sizes which he then arranged into lively compositions, striking for their play with color and contrast, their exploitation of decorative strategies, and their economy of means. The cut-outs reflect both a renewed commitment to form and color and an inventiveness directed to the status of the work of art. The largest and most extensive presentation of the cut-outs ever mounted, the exhibition includes approximately 100 cut-outs, as well as a selection of related drawings, prints, illustrated books, stained glass, and textiles. The last time New York audiences were treated to an in-depth look at the cut-outs was in 1961. This is for adults only! Every December for the last 17 years, Cacophonous Santas have been visiting cities around the world, engaging in a bit of Santarchy as part of the annual Santacon events.
