Operating Engineers Recruit Apprentices

The International Union of Operating Engineers, Local Union #15 Joint Apprenticeship Committee, will conduct a recruitment from March 18, 2011 through March 31, 2011 for two operating engineer (heavy equipment operator) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications can be obtained only at the following website: http://local15recruitment.org/ for ten business days (Monday through Friday), from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., during the recruitment period. All applications must be postmarked no later than April 21, 2011. Please follow instructions on the website. This is a lottery for an application. There is no guarantee after filling out the form on-line that everyone will receive an application.

Applicants without access to computers may visit their local library or call 311 to ask for their nearest Workforce One, One-Stop Center.

There will be a $25.00 fee for the aptitude testing, payable to the New York State Department of Labor. A determination to waive this fee will be made if prior notification is received and determined to be of good reason. For example, if you are on welfare or receiving social services, the fee will be waived. It will only be waived if you provide verifiable proof.

The Committee requires that applicants:

o Lift and move heavy tools and equipment parts, and will work from ladders and scaffolds.
o It may also include prolonged standing, climbing, walking, and repeated squatting, stretching and bending.
o Some work may be required under extreme weather conditions. An apprentice will, at times, be exposed to confined spaces where movement is greatly limited.

· Must take a physical examination including a drug test, at the sponsor's expense, after acceptance into the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
