[Fredslist] A question

I beg to differ, Roger.

BP will continue to have plenty of income despite the minority of world
citizens that will act against BP in any manner. If oil companies see NO
response to the long series of destructive incidents caused by BP in the
last ten years, then they will think impunity invites them to allow more
such incidents -- and they will be correct. By cutting corners, BP may
save, say, $5 billion annually (this is just a number I pick based on their
cutting corners in hundreds of wells). If oil companies feel that losing
$30 billion every ten years is quite profitable, and that no one cares, they
may continue to be criminally negligent and cause more suffering.

In case you don't believe that kind of thinking exists, remember that Ford
after realizing their gas tanks would explode (one of several models with
explosive / flammable gas tanks by Ford), did an accounting calculation to
determine the cost of deaths and injuries by allowing the exploding gas
tanks to be produced worldwide. The cost was lower than the cost of
scrapping the ready-to-roll design, so they released it to the public.

Without outrage by the public, and without public action, the criminals both
individual and corporate will feel there is no one who cares, and the
incidents will only get worse.

It is critical to all of us that BP stay financially viable and healthy. To
the extent BP cannot pay for the clean-up and reparations, it is a sure bet
that the rest of us will be paying for it in the form of higher taxes as the
government will be stepping in to 'finish the job'. It is in our collective
best interest to have BP strong and viable. Boycotting the stations is NOT
a good idea.

Boycotting BP stations hurts small business owners and lessees who struggle
daily - BP couldn't give a damn - Boycott the politicians who are not moving
on this manner - almost all of them are guilty.
Boycotting BP stations is a dumb idea.
