Re Catherine Carlisi's caution about puppy mills: I wholeheartedly agree.
Puppy mills are dangerous for everyone, the mother dog and puppies first &
foremost. Having had three positive experiences with it, I recommend
adopting a pet from a reputable animal shelter. Bideawee has branches in
Manhattan, Wantagh, and Westhampton; often there are full-bred puppies or
dogs there, and Bideawee in particular is careful to be sure the animals
are adoptable and that the adopters are right for the particular pet also.
Their pets for adoption can be seen on their website: www.bideawee.org.
This goes for cats and kittens too. Happy tails!

I just spent some time looking at the most under utilized, cheapest form of
self promotion or advertising in Gothamworld. It is "Who We Are" at the top
of the home page. Click on that and then on "Our Members". There you will
find innumerable categories. One will surely suit you. Presently, for
example, there are only 2 or 3 banks listed. And I know we have one in
every group. In your own interest, please go to work and make your entry.

To add my 2 cents to what David H. has said on FredsList (below), and to
what Mitch Tobol has posted in his Gotham Blog today, viewable at:
http://www.gothamnetworking.com/blogs/

Yesterday’s Roast was a unique event, and one heck of a fun way to spend a
Friday afternoon (even for one who had to commute from L.I. into the city
for it). Having seen video and heard audio of other roasts, I had a pretty
good idea of what to expect, but being there truly added a number of
elements to the experience. One of these elements was the ability to look
around the room at people on whom the videocameras were not focusing (there
were at least four big screens in the NY Hilton’s Grand Ballroom), and see
their reactions to the expletive-laden and deep blue nature of the comedy.
Suffice it to say that there were a couple of people on the dais who seemed
stunned (horrified, mortified, ossified) by what they were witnessing –
they pretty clearly either hadn’t been prepped or perhaps no amount of
warning could have prepared them for this….

One Gotham buddy of mine summed it up well when she said that she had
thought carefully about her decision of whom to invite as a guest – for
guests to enjoy the Roast they’d have to possess a thick skin and the right
sense of humor, because of the nature of much of the comedy – otherwise, it
could backfire.

I’ll never think quite the same way again about several of the on-air TV
personalities who verbally participated in roasting Matt Lauer: We get
accustomed to their goody-good, milktoasty TV personas, so it was slightly
jarring – and therefore all the more funny – to hear them drop the “F-bomb”
and engage in other ribald forms of humor.

“Roasting” is an art form separate and apart from pretty much all other
types of comedy. Some do it better than others. Some of the professional
comedians yesterday really “killed” and some fell surprisingly flat; and,
interestingly, the same went for the non-professional comedians, those who
have other kinds of on-air or executive day-jobs – several of them did
surprisingly well, whereas with others, many of us felt that they shouldn’t
have wasted so much time trying, unsuccessfully. Many Gothamites in
attendance (with perhaps one exception) expressed gratitude that the
gentleman on the dais sitting next to Omorosa didn’t get to roast Matt.
(Hey, Fred, don’t shoot the messenger!)

My bottom line on this event: I don’t get to take many real vacations, and
even when I do they’re pretty short, due to the nature of my practice. So
now and then, I fit in a “mini-vacation” here and there. That’s what
yesterday afternoon was for me, a mini-vacation, and it was a damned good
one. I wholeheartedly recommend that if the opportunity is offered again
next year, and you have the comedic stomach for it, you should try it. No
passport, plane tickets, or transfers required.

Subject: [Fredslist] Friar's Roast of Matt Lauer

I’ve wanted to go to one of these roasts since becoming a member of Gotham
and realizing we had a connection to the Friars. When the notice went out
that it was going to be for Matt Lauer, I knew I had to go. I work in the
PR business and realized this was a must see. I also decided it would be a
great event for me to take a client, which I did.

When I bought the tickets I asked Fred where the tables were and he said
“towards the back”. Fortunately for us, we really weren’t towards the
back, we were just about midway back and had a great view of the dais. I
was amazed at how many people there were attending (I think around 1,900)
and the size of the dias (somewhere between 40-50 people). The
introductions of the dais seemed to take forever. Interestingly, Fred was
seated next to Omorosa (of The Apprentice). I don’t think he knew who she
was…and I don’t still know why she would be on the dais.

Fred came over right before it started and said “this will be a once in a
lifetime experience.” He was absolutely right!

Because of Matt’s stature and celebrity, it brought out many to celebrate
and roast him. Some of those on the dais were (in no particular order),
Meredith Viera, Al Roker (the roastmaster), Ann Curry, Jeff Zucker (head
of NBC), Brian Williams, Katie Couric, Martha Stewart, Donald Trump, Bob
Costas, Jim Cramer, Dominic Cianese, Clive Davis, Neil Simon, Abe Vigoda
(yes, he’s still alive!), Aretha Franklin, James Lipton, Dara Torres,
Vincent Pastore, Bob Sagat, Jeff Ross, Richard Belzer, Pat Cooper, Gilbert
Godfried, Mario Lopez, and of course, our fearless leader Fred Klein.

After a few video intros, the lights came up and surprise guest Tom Cruise
walked onto the stage. He was quite funny and self deprecating. The roast
was mostly what I expected, having seen several on TV and YouTube. It may
have been a little more tame, given the honoree and the guests in
attendance, but it was at times, as raunchy as you’d expect.

You’d expect the professional comedians to be funny, I think Jeff Ross was
probably the best of that bunch (some of the pros, not as funny!). But
some of non-comedians where just as funny if not more. Surprises were
Brian Williams, Jeff Zucker and Meredith Vieira. And finally, when Matt
Spoke, he was quite funny as well.

It was a fun lunch…or afternoon as it turned out. There were many
Gothamites in attendance. My client had a great time and couldn’t thank me
enough for bringing him. All in all…a great afternoon!

Forbes writes today Parents are spending on their kids - and even more -
in this economy. Experts (including me) reinforced this in the article.

Keep this in mind as we all weather the financial changes. Parents will

Subject: [Fredslist] Buying a puppy on the Internet

I've been involved in dog breeding and showing since I was in my 20's, and
the Internet is a great marketing vehicle, but also raises a new level of
risk in puppy purchases because often it's not feasible to visit the site
and see the conditions, sire and dam, and puppies before purchase. I know
people who've done well with online purchases, and people who have been
burned.

There are many reputable breeders who use the Internet, of course, but it's
also easy to create a great web site that masks a "puppy mill." Puppy mills
often raise multiple (pricey and popular) breeds, use substandard breeding
stock and don't always take care of their animals or socialize puppies as
they should.

If you don't know anyone personally to ask, the best route is to call a few
Havanese breeders and ask them about their own dogs and other breeders
they'd recommend. In fact, you can call around for references from other
breeders about your Internet options, too. In many ways, the world of dog
breeding is a small one and reputable breeders will be glad to make
recommendations, even if you end up choosing another source.

I've sent a request out about good Havanese breeders to Afghan Hound
breeders I know (my favorite breed). I'll let you know when I hear back
from them. You're wise to investigate carefully before committing - it's
time well spent that can save expenses and heartache.

Subject: [Fredslist] How about cat (specifically, Abyssinian) breeders?

Hello, fellow Gothamites –

I’ve been reading with some interest the back-and-forth regarding dog
breeders. Having lost my 21-year old Somali (cat) back in June, I am now
very seriously looking for one or two (2 is probably more likely)
Abyssinian kittens. For those who may not know, a Somali is essentially a
long-haired variation of the Abyssinian.

Having been acquired by my most recent cats back in 1987 – while I was
living in Southern California – I am very much in need of any
recommendations of East Coast Aby breeders. I will not consider any sort
of “shipping” arrangement, so local catteries are preferred, but I could
also see making a long weekend road trip within, say, 300 miles
(particularly since the price of a gallon of gas is actually becoming
remotely affordable again).

Any Gothamly insights or suggestions . . . I’m all ears (OK, OK, that’s an
Aby joke!)

Gotham ....

This is basically a thank-you to all of you who responded to my query last
week ...

I asked for a taverna in Astoria, etc .... Here's the list of suggestions
.... Unfortunately, I can only report on one of them.

• Xenon Taverna - 34th street and 31st Ave

• Aliada Restaurant- Broadway and 30th street

2 for Taverna Kyclades.

"Taverna Kyclades is terrific. My wife loved it also."
 http://www.tavernakyclades.com/

33-07 Ditmas Blvd/33rd St
718 545-8666
"The real deal....fresh seafood and vegetables. ... Outside and inside
seating. ...Downside: busy, might have to wait."

2 votes for Elias' Corner
Corner of 31st and Astoria Blvd.
"Great food, relaxed, very casual atmosphere. Freshest fish around."

2 for Agnanti Meze
718 545.4554 ...1906 Ditmars Blvd
"Ultra fresh seafood/fish .... Waterviews."

'Agnanti is the best restaurant in Astoria. I've lived there for 8 years.
It is on the corner of 19th Street and Ditmars. You take the N train to
Ditmars Boulevard and exit on the Northwest corner. Walk from 31st Street
to 19th Street (west) and it is there on the corner. They have amazing
sausages with orange, grilled whole fish, a fabulous peasant salad and
other amazing dishes. You can't go wrong. Their phone number is
718-545-4554.'"

Telly's Taverna
28-13 23rd Ave/ @ 8th St. ... 718 728-9056
"Authentic....and you can sit for a while longer"

"Try Stamatis on 23rd Avenue I believe, delicious.

"It's not exactly a Taverna…..but have you tried Cavo Lounge and Café. It
is amazing."

Someone also suggested a neighborhood place in Bayside, which for
geographic reasons is where we ended up.

A great Greek restaurant in Bayside (don’t know if that neighborhood works
for you) is Kati Allo on Francis Lewis Blvd. Hope that helps.

It's basically a take-out place in the front with a 6-table restaurant in
the back .... and a garden, which had just closed. We were most pleasantly
surprised. Terrific eggplant salad (my fave of the spreads)l, yummy
kabobs, perfectly done .... I had a sole stuffed with spinach and feta.
Light. Yummy.

Oh ... and, to say the least, well priced.

Just one family at another table at 7:30 on a Saturday night ... Hard to
believe.

They were out of decaf coffee ... so we sadly went elsewhere for coffee and
dessert.
