Editorial Director: Financial Writer / Reporter / Editor

The M&A Advisor (www.maadvisor.com) is a premier provider of mergers and acquisition information for the middle market. It currently maintains and grows a number of specific lines of business including a monthly newsletter, weekly email alerts, website, e-zines, ancillary online/offline offerings and major industry events in the form of conferences, annual awards dinner, seminars and other events that are ideal for exchanging information, networking and closing merger and acquisition deals. 
The company is in a growth mode and is in need of an experienced director/writer/reporter.

The Editorial Director reports, writes, plans, implements and monitors editorial and quality standards for all newsletter division products (email, print and Web), manages new product development process, manages editorial staff (in-house assistants and freelance writers/reporters), secures industry experts to interview and speak at our conferences, tracks expenses to ensure they are within budget each month, motivates staff to achieve circulation and financial goals.

Qualifications:
" 5 - 7 years experience in progressively responsible editorial positions, beginning with reporter/writer through some editorial management
" 5+ years newsletter editorial experience
" Excellent grammar, writing and editing skills
" Excellent communication skills: written, oral and phone
" Good interpersonal skills
" Strong organizational abilities a MUST
" Ability to interview with key executives
" In-depth knowledge and understanding of the financial industry; M&A a plus
" Aptitude in research, good news sense, staff and financial management, scheduling and management
" Excellent computer skills
" Entrepreneurial spirit - ability to work within a small team environment

Duties and Responsibilities:
(Publications include newsletters, email, website, special reports, conferences, seminars, awards programs and other products and services, as they develop)

1. Newsletter writing, reporting and editing 
o Report, interview, write and edit stories to be timely, detailed and accurate o Ensure stories are concise and to the point, avoiding repetition and unnecessary information
o Ensure newsletter editorial uses good grammar
o Keep errors and typos to a minimum

2. Editorial Production
o Assure that deadlines are met
o Copyedit the newsletter and each publication for grammar, style, voice, structure, and adherence to editorial standards
o Proofread each publication at least twice
o Plan monthly story, assign art, research and write a minimum of one article (1,500 words) of each issue; copy edit, coordinate design with designers, and proofread
o Ensure newsletter layouts are logical and easy to follow with a minimum of jumps and similar stories packaged together 
o Ensure staff members or freelancers have the necessary resources to perform their duties 
o When necessary, assist in the desktop design of publications
o Retain and supervise editorial staff, and freelance writers, experts, editors, reporters and illustrators

3.  Seminar Series and Conferences
o Create leading topics for a program agenda that assists in attracting attendees
o Secure speakers to breakfast series and conferences
o  "Train" speakers in delivering top-notch presentations
o Awards program nominations and finalists oversight

4. Setting and implementing editorial standards
o Develop knowledge of readers for each publication through subscriber calls and interviews; perform at least two subscriber/member surveys each year and act on results
o Develop knowledge of issues of concern to newsletter subscribers
o Ensure stories demonstrate vision, depth and initiative in serving the audience
o Determine appropriate story mix for each issue
o Develop and enhance editorial style
o Develop agenda and attract speakers for physical and audio conferences
o Develop and edit website content and editorial development

5. Product development
o Monitor market for new opportunities (3-5 new print paid newsletters / year; 1-2 new product/month; 2-3 new e-mail products / quarter)
o Produce and market audio conferences (2-4 audio conferences / month)
o Assist in new product market research
o Produce or oversee prototype production
o Work with marketing staff to develop promotion copy
o Recommend editorial budget

6. Planning
o Develop editorial calendar for newsletter, email and website
o Develop production schedule for newsletter, special reports, other publications, email and website
o Develop and launch new publications and products - as well as identify and advance new acquisitions - by analyzing markets, developing a tight editorial focus, and coordinating with consultants and writers

7. Management
o Train editorial staff on good newsletter journalism techniques, developing sources, monitoring regulations, etc.
o Regularly communicate with subordinates, keeping them focused on division goals and objectives
o Clearly communicate expectations, give and accept appropriate feedback
o Monitor staff activities and assignments
o Challenge staff to develop new skills and areas of expertise
o Conduct performance reviews when appropriate

8.  Other duties - any other duties that may arise from the growth of the publishing division
