Losing Patience
Losing Patience
I sat in court last week watching two attorneys argue the merits of their cases. One of the attorney’s cases, clearly, had no merit. The attorney, however, continued to persevere, apparently, uncaring how ridiculous and uninformed he sounded.
I watched the judge, very patiently, facilitate both side’s arguments. I was sitting next to a friend who was listening as well. I whispered to my colleague, “That judge has so much patience. I would have shut that attorney down a long time ago.” His response was, “She’s younger than us. You’ll see. In a few years she’ll be as impatient as we are.”
Is that true? Do we lose patience as we get older? Is so, what is the end date for patience?

My answer is what is…
My answer is what is appropriate.
That said my law school contracts and ethics professor (two separate courses) argued that the role of an attorney is to represent the client's interest -- even if that means being a mercenary for a cause or person you otherwise disagree with. I appreciate the concept that every client is owed a vigorous offense or defense, especially in a criminal case where the prosecuting must make her or his case -- but I object to lending one's talent to empower a bad actor or outcome (or both).

Patience does seem to shorten as we get older and we think we get wiser.
