Am I a Nerd?

Am I a Nerd?

I was listening to a podcast where the podcaster was reviewing the new Star Trek show, “Star Trek: Star Fleet Academy.” At the beginning of the review the podcaster made a point of saying that he enjoyed science fiction and, therefore, was a nerd. I wondered why there had to be an association between enjoying science fiction and being a nerd?

My experience in reading and watching science  fiction is that science fiction invites you to imagine not just what is, but what could be. It often involves time travel paradoxes, futuristic technology, and alien civilizations.

Why does loving stories that involves big ideas, strange worlds, and often smart storytelling make me a nerd? And, if so, what does even mean?

Liking science fiction does not make you a nerd. That designation goes to those that live it, dressing the parts, going to all their conventions and quoting lines in daily life. Big difference in my opinion. I enjoy science fiction, but don't live in it.

"Nerd"  official def

1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person

2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific of technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept

3. A person who is intellectual but generally introverted

When I grew up, a nerd was synonymous with a "computer geek" however, almost everyone uses a computer now; hence, the def changes, see above.
