I've been called several times, in both federal and state court, but no lawyer wants a lawyer on a jury, so I've never served - would love to!

Jury Duty
Posted By : Fred Klein

I received a Juror Qualification Questionnaire in the mail.I eyed it warily as Jury Duty, even though provided for in the Constitution, is generally regarded unfavorably.I have been called, but have never served.I filled it out and will send it back.  My initial reaction is, except possibly for my vintage or being an attorney, I should qualify. We

So richly deserved. It was a privilege to honor my dear friend in this way.

Gotham's triple crown
Posted By : Corey Bearak

In 2012, Gotham added its Red Bandana Award, in addition to its annual Networker of the Year Award (initiated in 2004). The Year before (2011) Gotham selected my co-chair of GOtham GREEN® Joshua Zinder, and me as Networkers of the Year. Both awards, announced at Gotham’s Annual Holiday Party, can only be won once and gain entry in to the hallowed G

Being a Star Trek fan, I realized I underappreciated the music in the original series and the various spinoffs until I attended a Philharmonic concert playing musical pieces from the shows; I was so taken aback by the quality of the sound tracks that I've become a fan of movie soundtracks!

Soundtracks
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

Have you ever listened to the soundtrack to a movie without the movie? We had the privilege of being at Tanglewood last Saturday for John Williams’ Film Night with the Boston Pops.As I listened to the music, my daughter’s words of so many years ago resonated. She was about five years old when she said “You know Dad, Music goes right to your heart.”S

Times have become more complicated, and traditional gender roles have become a thing of the past - that's a benefit for men, I think, who historically have had a much more distant relationship with their kids, and are more attuned to day-to-day home life. That's not a bad thing, I think. The bad thing is that generally, women are now busier than ever, and some may have lost full control of the home, and may feel more uncertain given the many hats they wear and the feeling they have to be on top of both home and work life.

Women's Work
Posted By : Fred Klein

Women's Work is a term I heard in my youth. The use of the term today is pretty much taboo. When I was growing up my mom was charged with cooking, cleaning, child rearing and such.   My dad's responsibility was to earn a living and put food on the table.   Sounds simple, but in fact it was more complicated. Today it is far more complicated as gende

After a long winter, baseball awakens from hibernation and does not see its shadow! The magnolias and cherry blossoms are blooming and so are our expectations! LFGM!

Opening Day
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

Today is a special day. Although it is someone’s birthday, everyday is someone’s birthday. Today is special because it’s Opening Day — the Mets in Miami and the Yankees at home.Opening Day is very special. No statistics, hope and optimism reign supreme. Like race horses starting in the gate. All at the same place, waiting for the start. And it’s tim

I regularly enjoy conversing with folks with opposite political viewpoints - it's a great way to refine my own positions, allows for personal growth all around, and it brings people together during these polarized times. We need lots MORE of these events!

Boys Night Out
Posted By : Fred Klein

On Wednesday night I facilitated a "Boys Night Out".   Of course, we are no longer Boys, but we like to think of ourselves as such and maybe we act it at times.   In any case, we were an eclectic group of 6 guys (pictured). 4 from New York, one from New Orleans and one from Kentucky and, not coincidentally, 4 Liberals and 2 conservatives.   There w

As a recipient of the Gotham Foundation's largesse for Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow and the humbling Red Bandanna Award, I can personally vouch for "The Power of Gotham," and am blessed to be part of the Gotham Family. I look forward to seeing how we will continue to support new and other worthy causes.

With a Little Help from Our Friends
Posted By : Corey Bearak

On a day where many friends gather to catch a game or use a game an “excuse” to gather, I want to thank friends working together to make nice things happen.   I certainly have used this space to advocate for causes I support and work with and for.  Many friends in and out of Gotham join me to support Services Now for Adult Persons (SNAP) where I

Chances of a repeat are better than they've been in decades; all of the local area teams are middling-to-great, though we're not quite there yet.

1969
Posted By : Fred Klein

Last week my Friday With Fred blog was about the Anubis Horribus year of 1968, eg, 2 assassinations and my friend David Berger suggested I lighten it up by blogging about the wonderful subsequent year.   1969 has been called The Year That Shook the World.   Pictured are many of the wonderful highlights of a wonderful bounce-back year! For me, a Spo

We used to do that in person, at malls, where we got the wrong thing, and then we (or our gift recipients) had to make another trip to the mall to return/exchange, etc. The good thing now is that we can do all of that while wearing pajamas with a cup of coffee from our homes, and even if we receive the wrong thing, we have free returns and UPS labels. The bad thing is that stores are suffering and jobs are lost. The shopping mall will soon be a thing of the past, and commercial strips will need to innovate to stay alive. In my neighborhood, we lost Century 21, Modell's, TJ Maxx, New York & Company, and some of the mom and pop shops which were dependent on the foot traffic generated by the "hub" stores. I've recently counted 14 closed shops in just one block of our commercial strip. It's sad - fortunately, our restaurant and bar strips remain strong.

Lost in the Amazon
Posted By : Fred Klein

My wife couldn’t get the Amazon app to open on her computer, but I could on my phone.  So I agreed to help, in my way, with her holiday shopping.   And so began the following innocent, incompetent and frustrating adventure exploring the Amazon. In my own way, I then ordered the wrong thing or the wrong size or the wrong color.  Or I ordered the righ

No great pizza crawl can be complete without visits to Brooklyn's Juliana's (under the Brooklyn Bridge) and Lombardo's (Bay Ridge). We should set up a Brooklyn-only crawl - ?

My First Pizza Crawl
Posted By : Fred Klein

I went on my first Pizza Crawl on Tuesday night.   To be honest, it was my first “crawl” since infancy.  I’d never even done a Pub Crawl.   Reputably, Manhattan has the best pizza in the world and on Tuesday I sampled the best of the best under the guidance of my new friend Insurance Doctor Robert Intelisano, renowned Pizza Aficionado (he even writ
