Daughter "featured" in BP's SOTB

Friday, I attend the Queens Borough President's Annual State of the Borough ("SOTB") speech.  The last several years I've attended the SOTB with my daughter Marisa who works at the American Jewish Committee.  This year I met in the parking lot the venue, Queens Theatre in the Park, shares with the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.  She

Snowball

A pet is part of the family. When it’s time to say goodbye, permanently, it can really cause some stress to all that have experienced the loyalty and love that a treasured dog can offer. On April 14th, 2024 after 17 years and 7 months, we had to say goodbye to our “baby girl” (as my wife would call her) Snowball. She was a mix of Lhasa Apso and Poo

I remember calling my mother in San Francisco after a rather strong earthquake in Northern California. Her first words when picking up the phone were "It's not my Fault."

Shake it up!

Did you feel it?   I was in a meeting in Pelham NY when it happened. I thought it was so cool. People 300 miles from the epicenter felt the tremor which happened around 10:20AM yesterday The epicenter was about 4 miles southwest of Gladstone, NJ.   According to the U.S. Geological Survey tectonic summary, the earthquake occurred because of “oblique

Tomorrow is my birthday and over the last 10 years I have developed a tradition of memorializing it with a photo standing next to the applicable highway mile marker.   We "Snow Bird" in Key West which is the southern most point in the continental United States and US Highway 1 begins there at mile marker Zero.   Each year we venture up US 1 to the

Fresh clams open up when ready - takes no time at all and garlic rubbed bruschetta is always an easy accompaniment. When I had a backyard I would prep the corn by opening the husks to the stem, remove the "silk", tie the husks back into position with two outer leaves, and soak for an hour in cool water. Never Fail Method. I miss it. Needs no butter. For meat eaters, we used to roast a turkey (standing upright) in the Weber Grill. about 12 minutes per pound. Smokey...but no gravy for those who insist on having gravy.

Yes, I go for the easiest options...

Try this...

As spring approaches, many of you might be looking at your grills wondering what you might be cooking this year.    For me, I'm a year-round griller/smoker but the better weather allows me to smoke longer with more consistency, not always having to tend to the fire. I was asked last night for my recipe for smoking baby back ribs. So here it is (d

Correct. Or how the priority system is based, or the ripple effect. People say to me all the time " I recycle my garbage!" as though that was the high point of their actionable concern for the environment. Oy!

Two weeks ago yesterday on my way back from bringing in dinner, I notice fallen tree branches on my sidewalk.  Blocking it.  I moved them against the tree pit and which extends about 12 feet.  The larger of the two fallen branch still block access from the curb/street as it extends about 20 feet.  Shelly took this picture and I submitted it as p

Part of our responsibility as residents (or "citizens" or is it "Denizens"?) is to do what others can't or won't. Last week I picked up 8 cigarette butts embedded in the sidewalk cracks in front of the Library where I volunteer. The street cleaners - who are all really nice guys - hadn't come through yet and often their equipment will miss the smaller items. The week before someone had smashed their wine bottle on our steps, leaving tiny bits of glass everywhere. Why leave it for "someone else" to do? I can still manage to bend and pick things up. Citizenry is the Core of Corey!

New Haven is not just about Pizza. Our family-style restaurant is Skappo -Umbrian food, with much of the ingredients imported from the farms their relatives have. Anna ("Mama") greets everyone with kisses, stories, and joy; Yvette does waitressing and an occasional homemade olive oil cake; Michael is the wine expert; Marc is quietly cooking - unless he does a serranade during a break, Tom is the father who holds it all together - his artwork is for sale of course. Plus: Anna gives Italian Lessons, Marc is the Porcetta maestro, Better than dinner with Italians at home because there is no screaming or cigarette ash in the pasta.

It's nice to walk into a restaurant and have a rapport with the staff.   La Parma on Roslyn Rd, is such a place. A solid southern Italian restaurant where Jerard, the owners son, works and Rollie is the operations guy.    It's our go-to spot after the Sparks program, where the ambiance, the genuine connections, and the authentic southern Italian cu
