A tradition to be taken literally and figuratively at the same time.

Mile Marker
Posted By : Fred Klein

Tomorrow is my birthday and over the last 10 years I have developed a tradition of memorializing it with a photo standing next to the applicable highway mile marker.   We "Snow Bird" in Key West which is the southern most point in the continental United States and US Highway 1 begins there at mile marker Zero.   Each year we venture up US 1 to the

I know people who are so afraid of bridges they will not use them which limits their ability to travel to some places by ground transport. Some would say they are irrational ...

The Key Bridge
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

The tragic accident at the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore is sending shock waves through the country and, in addition to the loss of life, will be felt for many years to come. For me, news of the accident has a very personal side. I don’t want to speak badly of a bridge - especially after it has been knocked down and people are lost as a resu

I think it's even better because it was not what you ever expected.

Puppies
Posted By : Fred Klein

I am enamored by the word Puppy (and puppies too)! It is such a positive, loving, warm word, as in "Puppy Love" and all things sweet and adorable ❤️ By strict definition a Puppy is a young (less than 1 year) dog. Yet in my mind our Charcoal (an 11 year old Schnoodle pictured) is still a puppy and, yes, I am still in puppy love with her. She is swee

Access restored

Two weeks ago yesterday on my way back from bringing in dinner, I notice fallen tree branches on my sidewalk.  Blocking it.  I moved them against the tree pit and which extends about 12 feet.  The larger of the two fallen branch still block access from the curb/street as it extends about 20 feet.  Shelly took this picture and I submitted it as p

Most people have no idea how many tasks have been added to the government's 'to do' list many of which could be handled by the people for the people.

We used double futons for decades and recently return to conventional mattress. I knew after sleeping on those new pillow tops and the big box spring that an old fashioned hard mattress would be just fine. And the one we chose was not as expensive as the fancy ones. However, it certainly caused a bit of sticker shock.

Our New New Bed
Posted By : Fred Klein

Recently we bought a new mattress. The process was a complex one during which we were tested and we tested many mattress options.   Price aside (inflation is real), it was a complicated trial and error process. Eventually we decided on a thick pillow top mattress with new (full) box springs.   Then it happened, our new bed was delivered and assembl

Coming from Detroit, cars were a status symbol, a poltical statement and also a tradition. Families tended to drive the same type - the father's Oldsmobile tradition. Having one's own as a teen was a right of passage. I don't miss having one but remember the thrill of getting a new one. Glad Indie is smiling.

New Car (for my wife)
Posted By : Daniel Schwartz

There is always something special about getting a new car, be it leased or more so, in my opinion, when getting one that is purchased for the long haul. My wife’s 2017 Subaru Forester XT (turbo and very sporty for an SUV) was a special purchase for us when we traded in our last family minivan as we downsized a bit. Back then, we cross shopped many

For may years I did a global team training twice a year on the phone. It was easy in that I could read my presentation and could have perfectly timed. But it was disturbing not to know if I actually had an audience after I started. Now I have had the experience of teaching on Webinar format and feel the same way. It changes the energy, removes a dynamic that makes teaching fun and truly effective. As with any performance art, the ability to play off the audience makes creates a stickiness that is an important part of the process.

I had an unusual teaching experience this past week. Instead of the entire class on the screen, the format was a Zoom webinar.   So I taught for two hours seeing only myself without images of the students or even hearing their voices.   What I did was open the chat window and encourage the students to ask questions, comment, and respond when I aske

Donations
Posted By : Fred Klein

Have you ever been asked by a friend to make a donation to their cause? Do you dignify the request with a response? If you comply, what motivates you to do so? Also, what equation goes into the amount of the donation? Lastly, do you remember the amount? I'm not sure if there has been a scholarly study on this subject or that the answers to my above

I have tried to avoid answering with work or at least answer it with a questions that reflects what I do. Lately I have responded that I "look for ways to avoid being abducted by aliens." That seems to break the ice.

The Question
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

Shortly after meeting someone for the first time, the question is asked:“What do you do?”Invariably - at least in my experience- the question evokes a response about what someone does for a living, or, perhaps, did for a living. Is that changing?Do others, a different generation or otherwise, respond differently? How would it feel to answer the quest
