3 Movies about The Movies
Posted By : ODEY RAVIV

Three Oscar winning directors have used used their love of movies as inspirations for their new films.  Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelman’s”, Sam Mendes’s “Empire of Light”, and Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” explore the power of film to tell stories.   “Babylon” looks at the transition of movies from the silent era to the talkies.  The journey of 3 ch

Sounds very meaningful. Not going to the theater yet but appreciate being kept up to date. Actually, just reserved an ebook of the play from the library.

A Play That Digs Deep
Posted By : ODEY RAVIV

“Cost of Living”, the 2018 Pulitzer winning play, has finally made its Broadway debut.  Martyna Majok’s play has been performed in theaters all over the USA.  It has touched audiences with its realistic exploration of life’s challenges.  The four character play delves into intimacy and dependency in a fresh manner.  Two of the characters are physic

I Love this show. Will really miss it. Curious to hear what Pamela Adlon is going to do next. Saw her on the Today Show and she mentioned that she has a podcast--took a quick look and seems like they focus on one episode of the TV show per podcast episode. Pamela Adlon is going to be speaking at the 92 St Y this coming Monday--in person and virtual. I may try to catch it from home.

“Better Things” is a Great TV Show
Posted By : ODEY RAVIV

A show about a single mother, her three daughters, and her mom may not sound like a great watch.  But, “Better Things” is rated a must watch 96 on MetaCritic and it received a 100 rating from Rotten Tomatoes.  And, I think it is one of the best shows ever done.   Pamela Adlon the star, producer, writer, and director has created a show that has humo

Not yet attending shows--but Coal Country would have been my top pick. I like Steve Earle--have seen him in concerts--first knew of him from the TV show Treme. Show sounds sad but moving--know I would have liked it.

Art is a Matter of Taste
Posted By : ODEY RAVIV

Art can be defined as the producing of works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.  We have all experienced a performance that we know is beautiful but for some reason we do not feel its emotional power.   I went to two celebrated Off-Broadway shows recently.  Both received rave reviews from theater critics and received n

Just finished Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land. I listened to the audio which the author narrated but I'm sure it will be an excellent print experience as well. It is a memoir of her life lived in poverty and all of the degradations, frustrations, and logistics involved with meeting basic needs for herself and her daughter. Not depressing because she never gives up hope--but, very humbling.

What Are You Reading?
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Friends, I’m ready for a new book.  Rona’s blog yesterday sent me thinking.   I enjoy reading – but honestly, the pandemic has interrupted my reading flow.  I’m not sure exactly why.  Once would think with soooooooo much time at home, there would be more opportunity to immerse in a good book.  Maybe.  But it hasn’t worked that way for me.   Regardl

Thanks for the reviews, Odey, very helpful. I had heard about Passing and wanted to see it but didn't know it was on Netflix; never heard of Hand of God but I have a fascination with Naples so will definitely watch it; had heard of Power of the Dog but didn't think I would be interested in the setting--you changed my mind. Have not watched anything new lately but this weekend re-watched Jim Jarmusch's Stranger than Paradise--enjoyed the grittiness and the low-key vibe.

3 New Netflix Movies Take Us Places
Posted By : ODEY RAVIV

One of the fascinations of moviegoing, for me, is going to worlds and times that are new. I always try to not know the plot details and I will not provide any spoilers.  Three terrific movies provide such an experience.  Two of them journey to the American past and the other takes us across the ocean to Italy. Try to stay in the dark about the plot

Sitcoms as Cultural Artifacts

The best Situation Comedies reflect the times and make us think about circumstances and experiences beyond our reality.  A rating of the top 100 SCs in Rolling Stone covered a lot of territory.  TV fans check it out.     The top 5 in descending order are: All in the Family, I Love Lucy, Seinfeld, Cheers, and the winner-The Simpsons.     The idea th

Expectations Exceeded
Posted By : ODEY RAVIV

It seems that movies, shows, plays, museums, gardens, and parks are always hyped as being “can’t miss”.  I had heard for years about the Green-Wood Cemetery as a place that I had to visit.  I was not motivated because I really did not know what all the fuss was about.  A week ago, I finally took the plunge.   First of all, it is beautiful.  Green-W

Looking forward to seeing this. I was a fan of the show. Before I got HBO (which I had to do after the first season), my husband and I went to the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria every Sat and Sun for several weeks--they aired the complete season 1. We got hooked and subscribed to HBO. When I see the movie, think I will feel sad, though, that James Gandolfini is no longer with us. Loved the theme song, so looking forward to hearing it again.

Sopranos Fans-Interested in the Prequel or Hoping for a Sequel?
Posted By : ODEY RAVIV

The Sopranos took the country by Storm in 1999 and left with a giant Question in 2007.   I was hooked and every Sunday was a must watch.  HBO subscriptions went through the roof.  Talking about the episodes on Mondays with co workers, family, and friends became a routine.  Even radio hosts took calls about the previous nights’ escapades and mysteri

Broadway is Back, Will You Be?
Posted By : ODEY RAVIV

I always look forward to the excitement of the Fall Cultural Season. The Sunday New York Times features a bunch of gigantic sections for the New Seasons of Movies, Television, Music, Dance, and Theater.   But, the major essay about the fall season has this ominous headline.  “The Thrill is Back, So is the Anxiety.”  Earlier in the summer, the optim
