A little over a year ago I wrote a blog about the conflict in my town concerning the opening of Costco. Approximately eighteen months later, all the struggles have quieted down and Costco has become a way of life.     We find ourselves going to Costco about once a week. I have, essentially, stopped making roasted chicken or homemade chicken soup because I cannot make either less expensive than it is to purchase it ready made in Costco. We even bought a new couch, as wel...

Anyone who knows me knows that, my fear of flying notwithstanding, I love to travel. I love to experience everything different countries have to offer, the sights, sounds, and tastes. I believe that a crucial part of the experience is tasting the local cuisine.     As those of you who are friends with me on Facebook know, I spent last week in Scotland. In Scotland, tasting the local fare meant trying black pudding (blood sausage), haggis (“a savory pudding containing ...

Welcome to September Gotham. As many of you know, I’m a lifelong Weight Watcher. I attend meetings and I follow them on social media. This morning I read something interesting on their Instagram account, a challenge to avoid eating fast food throughout the month of September.     When I first read the challenge, I thought it would be easy for me, as I do not consider myself a fast food eater. Then, when I read the “fine print”, the difficulty level for me increased as it ...

With Memorial Day upon us both me, and my fellow bloggers, are all thinking about bar-b-que. So my queries on this Memorial Day are simple, hotdog or hamburger? And mustard or ketchup?   Personally, I am a hotdog person. Most often with ketchup (sacrilege?) but sometimes with mustard and sauerkraut. Happy Memorial Day Gotham!!...

I need to thank Nancy for inspiring this blog. One of my favorite apps is OpenTable. I love just clicking on the app and making dinner reservations in a matter of seconds. I will rarely, if ever, go out to dinner on a Saturday night to a restaurant that does not accept my OpenTable reservation. I have also, successfully used OpenTable when traveling to various cities to make meal reservations.   And, as much as I depend on OpenTable, I know that I don’t truly understand i...

Food hacks are all the rage. To me, a food hack is a new or different way to prepare or serve food. Recently, while on the Weight Watchers app, I watched a video of a celebrity chef demonstrate a truly different way to prepare caramelized onions. I had to try it.   Essentially, the recipe involved taking a whole, unpeeled onion and giving it a light coating of olive oil and salt. You then wrap the onion in tin foil and put it in the oven at 350 degrees. The chef said you...

As I have written, Costco has opened in my town. We find ourselves shopping more and more in Costco for our everyday items. And my shopping habits are beginning to change. For instance, I love making roasted chicken. I rarely now, if ever, cook chicken because I cannot buy a raw chicken anywhere cheaper than I can purchase one of Costco’s rotisserie chickens. And my family loves their rotisserie chickens.     A few months ago, I purchased a box of Starbucks Pikes Peak k...

I have often written about the effect baseless online reviews have had on me and my colleagues. This week it happened to friends of mine, in a particularly vicious way, and it made me extremely angry.     There is a Facebook page called Tri-State Restaurant Club. It can be very informative at times. But, I have also found that people can be very vicious on the site. They tend to write reviews with little or no regard for the effect it might have on a small business.  ...

At a recent Gotham Long Island Dinner meeting, Nancy asked the following question, “What is your favorite thing to do on Long Island in the summer?” My response needed no thought since it is something my husband and I do every summer, “We search for the perfect lobster roll.”     My answer sparked such a lively conversation that I knew it would make a good subject for a blog. One of my favorite places to order a lobster roll was The Lobster Roll in Riverhead. But they cha...

Today, as we honor our fallen heroes, we also mark the first weekend of the summer. To me, the summer is all about bar-b-que. And when you think about bar-b-que, most people think about hamburgers and hot dogs.     Hamburgers seem to be having a resurgence in popularity. There are specialty hamburgers restaurants popping up everywhere, i.e. Shake Shack, Burger Fi, Five Guys etc. And the toppings people are enjoying on hamburgers have become just as noteworthy as the burge...
