My family and I enjoyed a delicious paella dinner in the city Saturday night. The occasion was to celebrate my stepson’s birthday (that he happens to share with Fred). In the spirit of celebration, I ordered a pitcher of sangria for the table. To be a bit bold and adventurous I ordered something intriguing on the menu, rose sangria, without questioning the server about it.   The others at the table loved the sangria. From my first taste, I knew something was wrong. There was...

My family all laughed at me when I brought it home. They asked me how often would I use it, where would I put it etc.? But I was intent on showing them it was a useful item.   I am talking about my Dash small six egg cooker. I purchased it about a year ago much to my family’s complete amusement. It has, however, quickly become a much-used item in my household. Everyone seems to like a perfectly cooked hard boiled egg, whether  to eat alone or add to a salad.     Despite the ...

This past Saturday Mitch posted about Halloween. He had mentioned that he had not yet bought candy. Given the current circumstances, I can understand why he waited. As a candy lover, however, I always am very well stocked several weeks before Halloween. This year was no exception.   Every year the struggle with purchasing candy is always the same; do I buy what I like and risk eating the leftovers, if any? Or do I buy what I do not like and happily give away any leftovers? E...

With Memorial day weekend upon us, hopefully everyone is outside enjoying much needed fresh air. And, when I think of Memorial Day, I think of bar-b-ques. A thought I do not believe the current situation will change. In fact,  I believe we need our bar-b-ques even more this year. So the natural question is, what is your preference? Are you a hamburger person or hotdog person? Or both?           I am a hot dog person. I am not a fan of hamburgers, at all. Although I like my ...

A little over a year ago I wrote a blog about the conflict in my town concerning the opening of Costco. Approximately eighteen months later, all the struggles have quieted down and Costco has become a way of life.     We find ourselves going to Costco about once a week. I have, essentially, stopped making roasted chicken or homemade chicken soup because I cannot make either less expensive than it is to purchase it ready made in Costco. We even bought a new couch, as wel...

Anyone who knows me knows that, my fear of flying notwithstanding, I love to travel. I love to experience everything different countries have to offer, the sights, sounds, and tastes. I believe that a crucial part of the experience is tasting the local cuisine.     As those of you who are friends with me on Facebook know, I spent last week in Scotland. In Scotland, tasting the local fare meant trying black pudding (blood sausage), haggis (“a savory pudding containing ...

Welcome to September Gotham. As many of you know, I’m a lifelong Weight Watcher. I attend meetings and I follow them on social media. This morning I read something interesting on their Instagram account, a challenge to avoid eating fast food throughout the month of September.     When I first read the challenge, I thought it would be easy for me, as I do not consider myself a fast food eater. Then, when I read the “fine print”, the difficulty level for me increased as it ...

With Memorial Day upon us both me, and my fellow bloggers, are all thinking about bar-b-que. So my queries on this Memorial Day are simple, hotdog or hamburger? And mustard or ketchup?   Personally, I am a hotdog person. Most often with ketchup (sacrilege?) but sometimes with mustard and sauerkraut. Happy Memorial Day Gotham!!...

I need to thank Nancy for inspiring this blog. One of my favorite apps is OpenTable. I love just clicking on the app and making dinner reservations in a matter of seconds. I will rarely, if ever, go out to dinner on a Saturday night to a restaurant that does not accept my OpenTable reservation. I have also, successfully used OpenTable when traveling to various cities to make meal reservations.   And, as much as I depend on OpenTable, I know that I don’t truly understand i...

Food hacks are all the rage. To me, a food hack is a new or different way to prepare or serve food. Recently, while on the Weight Watchers app, I watched a video of a celebrity chef demonstrate a truly different way to prepare caramelized onions. I had to try it.   Essentially, the recipe involved taking a whole, unpeeled onion and giving it a light coating of olive oil and salt. You then wrap the onion in tin foil and put it in the oven at 350 degrees. The chef said you...
