Great film. We went to the movies this weekend. It was an empty theatre and we sat right in the middle – but that was so close to the screen that it literally felt like we were in the movie. If you haven’t seen it (and I won’t ruin it for you), the film is a heart wrenching account of a war story in which the filmmakers graphically take the viewer through some painful experiences. I’m not necessarily a war movie fan, but I thought this was an artfully created story with ex...

Every year I take a stroll down the Super Bowl experience on the Tuesday following from the perspective of someone who doesn’t really engage in the actual game. That means a review of the commercials and the half-time show. Quite honestly, I was a little disappointed with the commercials this year. There were a few memorable moments. I particularly enjoyed Bill Murray and the stroll down Groundhog Day lane. On a more serious note, I literally applauded at the Olay commer...

I must admit, I didn’t even notice that there was no host Sunday night for the Academy Awards. The opening musical number was fabulous – Queen with Adam Lambert was a "wow". Followed by three just plain funny women – Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. And then off to the awards! In my opinion, the show moved faster and with more intention than some wandering prior years. The fashions were as always, well, fashionable. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper steamed up the...

I didn’t see the whole exchange, but I have been fascinated by the story.   Serena was accused of cheating and reacted, loudly and strongly. She would never cheat to win she said. She would rather lose.     Serena accuses the umpire of sexism.     Her opponent, Naomi Osaka, who in her own words, wasn’t supposed to win, did just that. Then she apologized behind her own tears while winning the trophy of her dreams.     Serena congratulates Osaka at the net and quiets a ...

I admit that periodically, I enjoy a good binge watch. My first ever binge was Mad Men. I couldn’t get enough. I almost missed my train stop more than once, absorbed in a particular story line as the E train pulled into the Fifth Avenue station.     Later, I ran through Orange is the New Black at an even quicker pace.     My current binge though is The Crown. Apparently, I knew very little about the British monarchy. I find myself following every episode with an in de...

If you could pick just one Broadway show to see, what would it be?     We are big Broadway fans, most often musicals. We have seen Les Miserables multiple times and really loved Book of Mormon.     We are ready to expand our list. What are your suggestions? ...

Bette kept on going.     Sunday night, Bette Midler won the coveted Best Actress in a Musical for her role in the revival of Hello Dolly. I happen to be a huge Bette Midler fan, so perhaps I am biased.     But I thought she looked wonderful and her speech was hilarious. Nothing was going to stop her. It went on for four minutes. Even when the music started to cue her off the stage, she just yelled and the orchestra and kept on talking.     She has had a long and bless...

I didn't watch most of the Oscars Sunday night, although it was on in the background for a while. I happened to sit down for the very end, just as Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were walking on stage to present the Best Picture award. I was really taken by Faye Dunaway's dress.     But when Warren Beatty seemed confused as he was preparing to announce the winner, that didn't make sense to me. The rest of the presentation was a little surreal. I saw an Oscars staffer behin...

Recently I saw a picture of Hilary Clinton at a public event. She was looking out at the crowd smiling and waving but the entire crowd had their backs to her with one arm up in the air. What were they doing, you ask? They were all trying to take a selfie with Hilary.     Selfies are a modern day phenomenon. Every where you go, someone has their phone turned to themselves to memorialize a moment.     There are all sorts of theories about how to ensure the best selfie. T...

You may catch me giggling out loud on the Long Island Railroad. I am in the middle of Billy Crystal’s most recent book, “Still Foolin' 'Em: Where I've Been, Where I'm Going, and Where the Hell Are My Keys?” Billy Crystal makes me laugh out loud. I think it is partly because he talks about his own experiences, and being from a Jewish family and living on Long Island, I can relate to his humour. In particular, this most recent book has me laughing out loud as it reflects...
