Who's Calling?
Posted By : Corey Bearak

In this era where it seems (and maybe it's reality) that we receive more bogus, phishing, sales and solicitation calls than calls from those we know, I long opted to answer, "Who's calling."  Where I recognize the number as legit I answer the call with "This is Corey" or if the caller ID makes clear I know the caller,  i often state hi or hello (na

With a Little Help from Our Friends
Posted By : Corey Bearak

On a day where many friends gather to catch a game or use a game an “excuse” to gather, I want to thank friends working together to make nice things happen.   I certainly have used this space to advocate for causes I support and work with and for.  Many friends in and out of Gotham join me to support Services Now for Adult Persons (SNAP) where I

As we approach Thanksgiving in the week that follows the one that starts today, I call attention to a special day that takes place the Tuesday AFTER Thanksgiving, this year, Tuesday November 29, 2022: GIVING TUESDAY. Thanksgiving became a time to focus on the causes we support and I devote a blog to giving on or around Thanksgiving. Last year, I

So I am speaking to my friend Jeff discussing plans for later in day for him and where I would be heading next.  He mentions going to his son in the same town where I am earlier heading to see Shelly's niece.  On the way my wife texts her niece and she believes she and husband met Jeff and his wife at holiday services.  Further it turns out Jeff's

Usually, the plan involves a Broadway musical. This year she just wanted a nice restaurant. Marisa proposed three; I selected one, Foragers in Chelsea. Shelly liked the choice. Shelly and I arrived early and enjoyed cocktails.  She even had me post it to Facebook – not something I do but for my lovely and dear wife I made an exception – with a m

Folks know my preference to work outdoors. Not hard labor (of course I have the ability); just setting up on my deck with much the same accoutrements I enjoy at when in my office (where I draft today’s commentary). The internet, cordless phone, iPhone, iPad and MacBook all facilitate a seamless transition from a desk inside to a comparative outside

So I received an email out of the blue apparently from the Grand Chancellor (“head honcho”) of the Order Knights of Pythias in New York, an involvement covered by this correspondent last week. Since the “GC” does not do email, I figured to suggest he call me on my cell as I “occupied” my outside office but left the landline inside. In stead of a ca

Last culminated a number of important events in the Order Knights of Pythias where I hold a number of roles in NewYork. Last Wednesday, our Grand Chancellor, elected at our Grand Convention last month, delivered his message at a special event called the “Pythian Investiture” and I was “invested” as his “Executive Secretary” (see photo at left where

It was a whirlwind of a week. Sunday afternoon I had an appointment at the Apple Store in Roosevelt Field to determine if my iPad which failed to charge Friday could be repaired; I replaced it with a newer model. Sunday eve we attended a Theresa Foundation Comedy Fundraiser and Shelly won a raffle. Monday, setting up a meeting and photo shoot the n

Adding some color

About a week after Father’s Day, tree dropping that require frequent if not daily sweeping, virtually stops; it “allows” me to drop a fresh layer of red mulch in our yard. It gives a nice look to the yard. This year Shelly added more plants; I like the look. It’s a nice to view it from the deck where most days my “summer office” is sited.

2 graduations and some history
Posted By : Corey Bearak

Referring back to last’s week’s commentary in this space, we ventured to Boston, MA to attend the graduation ceremony of the “scribe” this past Friday at Northeastern University. The new PhD and her PhD spouse joined us for a celebratory dinner that eve; we also celebrated in advance the graduation this afternoon of the new PhD at Hofstra. Aft

At the last Gotham “Happy Hour” over Zoom, I opted not to use one of my Gotham backgrounds (Of late, I generally used the Citi Field Scoreboard announcing “Gotham Networking”.). I used the trees in my yard background that reflect what folks saw last year when I participated in Zooms from my “outside office.” Indeed some at Happy Hour suggested I wa

Making the most of a mild mid-winter day
Posted By : Corey Bearak

The uncharacteristically mild day enjoyed yesterday certainly invited folks to spend time outside. I did. I even donned one my my N95s. Not to protect me around others. The outing remain totally solo. The mask made sense because I opted to go under my deck and clear the leaves that got through. In the past the dirt from the raking and sweeping migh

I suspect folks who attended the Gotham Happy Hour on Friday might expect one of my musicals blog. Suspect they need to wait until the proverbial next year, to apply the well-used cliché. Instead, I prefer to hail and welcome a significant change in the fraternal Order Knights of Pythias. The Order, founded in Washington, DC, in 1864, became the fi

A lot leaves to be desired

Yesterday, the City (of New York) was to collect fallen leaves put out for collection in Paper Leaf Bags or open containers from residential.  Originally there were two dates for collection but the one for the weekend after Thanksgiving got nixed with little fanfare.  So I fulfilled my "obligation" to gather the leaves not yet bagged to put out for
