The number of times running up and down all the steps, trying to keep my scared, reactive dog from wanting to munch on the other scared, reactive dogs in the shelter, trying to just breathe through it, and wondering where the booms are in terms of how close they are to your apartment. The whooshing of our interceptor missiles sounds as if they are literally just above our heads. When they pass over us, the 35 or so of us who are sitting in the shelter hunch over and throw our arms over our heads in an instinctive protective dance move. And yes, Tel Aviv has been hit several times. I have a colleague who returned from the shelter to find his entire building destroyed, and a car that had been parked on the street was catapulted up and landed inside the living room of a first-floor apartment. I never really thought I'd be subject to living through a war. And now I've kind of lost count of how many different times I've had to do it. I know that this has bound me even closer to my daughter, who lives only a mile away, but it feels like kilometers when I know she's on her way here for our daily hug. People mistake the Israeli "nonchalance" of going out to get a coffee in between salvoes, but really, it's just resilience. Otherwise, you'd go nuts. And when you walk outside, you consciously keep your eyes open for where you can shelter during the next salvo if you can't make it back to your regular one. Discussions abound about which one is better, cleaner, has a bomb door you can close, and of course, Wi Fi. Some nights are quieter, and we get a full night's sleep. A real luxury is the opportunity for a decent shower, a short walk with the dog, and the chance to put up a load of laundry. Last night, however, we had missiles and drones every 2 hours, beginning at about 10:00 pm and continuing until 6:00 am. I live in an old building with no elevator on the 2nd floor (in US terms, that's the 3rd floor). Add to that the additional flight of steps to get down to our crusty, rebar, and cement-lined shelter, and I can cancel my gym subscription. Americans don't realize that the variation of shelter options is limited. Our shelter usually has 20-35 people and around 5 dogs. It's not just our tenants who enter. Anyone running by during a siren and sees our front door open (who says Israelis aren't polite?) runs in with their "go bags" and animals if they have them. (Last night, we had a young woman soldier run in wearing her rifle, which was almost the same size as she was.) Other people go to underground parking lots and just stay there. Many people don't go anywhere . . . there is no shelter in their building or they are old or handicapped, and so they just go to the stairwell and hope they're lucky. During the 12-day war in June, the Boursa (stock exchange) building was hit. My Hebrew teacher lives 3 blocks away in an 8-story apartment building. The concussion from the ballistic missile that hit the Boursa was so intense that it blew out all the shutters and windows from the front of her building. She lives with her elderly, wheelchair-bound husband and his caregiver. Luckily, they had the initial 7-minute warning before the 90-second warning (saying you'd better be in the shelter)! and made it down the elevator to their building's miklat (underground shelter). If not, they would have received the blowback of the windows exploding. I hesitate to even imagine that scene. A final note: many people not living in Israel and just scanning headlines forget that it's not just their friend/relative who is running each time. Depending upon where the missile is headed, it's millions of people all running at the same time. The other night, an older woman was in the street after we were released from a salvo, and she was so confused and frightened as to which shelter to run to next time. Finally, she just looked at me and asked if I would give her a hug. I did, and think that gave her a momentary sense of safety. I hope this ends soon, and I hope we don't have to revisit this in a few months or a few years. Thank you again for reaching out. He’s one year sharper, wiser, kinder and still as charming as ever! Many of you may have heard the story that dates back to 1997 recounting how Gotham was born. If you haven’t, reach out to Fred and he’ll gladly share it with you. What stands out most to me in that story is, Fred’s determination to step out of his comfort zone and his willingness to build something better and more suited for fostering community. If you enjoy Gotham’s unique brand of networking – it comes from the top on down! After 84 revolutions around the sun, he could just hang back and relax. After all that he’s accomplished, he’s certainly earned it. Instead, Fred shows up every single day for his family, friends, his mentees and of course, all of us! He may occasionally do it from the front porch of his Key West home with a Cuba Libre in his hand, but he gets it done! And more importantly, he continues to GIVE! There is no better example than our Annual Season of Giving Initiative through The Gotham City Networking Foundation , which is set to commence on April 1st (stay tuned for the announcement). You’ve heard me say this before, but it’s worth repeating: Fred is the mentor of all mentors, the godfather of all godfathers and quite frankly – the most interesting man in the world! In fact, ask him about his doppelgänger. 😉 If you know Fred Klein, you can confidently say: “I know a guy”!
