My Gotham Family,
I wish you all had gotten to meet mom.

Mamini Goel, our beloved mother, passed away on Thursday, December 5th, 2024, surrounded by love from her husband, Ramesh; children Raj, Meena, and Tina; children-in-laws Sharon, Indrajit, and Varun; members of our extended family; and, our family priest.
A woman of incredible strength and unwavering resolve, Mamini was known for her open and loving heart. Once she set her mind to something, she was determined to make it happen. Her devotion to her family was unwavering. Known for her jovial personality, Mom’s door and kitchen was always open to all. Most of our friends never knew her real name - she asked our friends to call her MOM and she became a matriarch to many.
Born in 1952 in India, she was married to our father in 1969, at only 17 years of age. Raised in an era where girls were only allowed 4th grade education, Mom demanded that she be allowed to finish high school before marriage. Mom was a life-long champion of higher education for all, especially girls, not only educating her own daughters, but also supporting the education of relatives in India. Dad moved to the US in 1975, and Mom managed the home front in India until 1980, when she migrated to the US with Raj and Meena.
After 28 years of being a homemaker, and having then married off her two elder children, she began to fulfill her own dreams. She went back to school, engaged in computer classes, went door-to-door to encourage underrepresented immigrant families to be counted in the 2000 census. She also became a tax preparer and took great pleasure in assisting clients file personal income tax returns for nearly 20 years. She never encountered an obstacle she could not overcome.
Despite being raised in a conservative Hindu society, Mom made friends across classes, castes, and religions. She had Hindu, Muslim, Jain, Punjabi, Persian friends. Mom reveled in learning about vegetarian dishes across cultures and she was equally adept at making Amti-Puranpoli, Masala Dosa, Falafels, and Vegetable Mac-n-Cheese at home (and offering it to everyone who walked in the door)!
