[Fredslist] Being entertaining and entertained ... a Gotham tradition

There are times to be entertained and times to be entertaining. The Gotham community is always game for both and often they happen concurrently.

On Thursday evening it was time for the Battle of the Bands. In years past, this event has been held in high school gymnasiums and iconic NYC venues with live bands entertaining a live audience eager to be entertained.

Last year the Battle was put on hold as we moved through CoronaTimes. However, we were not at a loss for entertainment. Added to the lineup of Gotham events have been various other programs – BINGO, karaoke, seminars, and the weekly Happy Hour where members and guests are both entertained and entertaining.

For Happy Hour we have been entertained by name talent booked by our events chair, Norman Spizz (SPN Music and Entertainment.) Some weeks, we have been easily able to entertain ourselves with witty (and often snarky) repartee. Stories and jokes abound and laughter is abundant. This past week, the conversation moved quickly across topics as varied as geography, phobias, shared memories, poetry. Thank you Rick Raymond for sharing Pablo Neruda’s poem “You Start Dying Slowly.” Serious entertainment to be sure.

This year the Battle of the Bands was held virtually. There was a complete report of winners and sponsors on Fred Klein’s entertaining Friday Blog, so check that out on the Gotham website or on our Gotham LinkedIn page.

Presented on Zoom in a webinar format made possible by our social media and marketing guru Mitch Tobol (CGT Marketing) we were entertained by 7 talented finalists and Norman Spizz as our witty and informative MC. Fred Klein (Klein Zelman Rothermel Jacobs and Schess) kept the audience engaged – especially while the judges made their decision.

Cayce Crown (The Crown View) our videographer, fused the video submissions, credits, and other video segments into an entertaining creation demonstrating the metaphysical notion that the whole can be way more than the sum of its parts if handled by a pro.

The fact that the audience could not engage verbally didn’t stop them from entertaining each other via the chat - a perfect vehicle for commentary and for offering applause via emoji. It was great fun – a fabulously entertaining Battle!

Join us this week on Friday at 5pm for another happy hour where we all have an opportunity to be entertained, be entertaining, or both. As for the Battle of the Bands … Next year in NYC!
