Dear Tribe (From last week’s 9/16 virtual NY Health & Longevity...Next zoom mtg. is Oct. 28th, noon):
Stress robs health, depletes energy, and destroys enjoyment and learning.
Psychotherapist Dr. Janet Sullivan shared insightful and thought-provoking findings about the stress and anxiety hormone changes that assault our brains and nervous systems during periods of sustained uncertainty. Advisers and guests generously shared their deep upsets with our acrid political environment; a woefully out-of-step government; a tragically managed COVID; a retrenching economy; racial inequality and more. They also recommended the following tools for effectively protecting oneself from the toxic health consequences of sustained stress and uncertainty.
1) Acknowledge and own your feelings. “You have to feel in order to heal”.  It’s important to acknowledge how frightened or how out of control you feel.2) “Stay in gratitude.”  If you have 100 complaints,     be mindful of 1000 blessings.3) “Be present to & embrace nature”: Notice blue skies, shifting clouds, a flower, tree or plant;  feel the breeze against your     skin; hear the birds sing, the dog bark and the laughter of children; savor the scent of cooking food, smoking chestnuts     in the fall, rising bread,or a fresh cut orange. 4) Learn to Forgive. Don’t make this or any other assault unforgivable.5) Be generous to yourself as daily wonders an assaults flow through you.6) Stay in community. And don’t forget genuine acts of kindness even if it’s a smile or a nod.
Meditation is a proven stress buster and provides numerous health benefits. The following programs and/or apps were recommended.
TM-Meditate.org - Twice daily guided meditation calls from around the world (also provides a heartening sense of community.
Two apps include: Meditate Me and Calm. Calm can assist with sleep and meditation. For Calm, you can also Cell #. 516.528.5599 According to several, both are great stress-reducers.
