The Gotham Power Breakfast Group zoomed into a super-productive breakfast meeting this morning, joined by several circuit riders and guests, including insurance adjuster Jason Greenberg, networker extraordinaire Noel Luria of Prestige Title, Stephanie Shalofsky of The Organizing Zone, Scott Bloom of the Bloom Real Estate Group, Jane Beddall of Dovetail Resolution, Dan Schwartz of Carr Business Systems, and Gotham "member-in-progress" - financial planner Benjamin DeAngelis. And of course, many thanks to our ever-present leader, Fred Klein, for joining us, along with Charcoal!
Fascinating topics included:
* An insurance education by Gotham Long Islander Jason Greenberg on the different types of business interruption claims in the age of Covid, including the example of a forward-thinking entrepreneur who purchased a policy exclusion override which allowed her to claim over $1,000,000 in losses to her nationally-based conferencing business;
* Valuable insight from Gotham Real Estate Group Chair Scott Bloom showcasing the differences in commercial real estate market trends, with actual and projected growth in the medical, manufacturing and warehouse industries, investment in novel office redesign to create "safe space" environments, and increased bullishness in the shared space realm, all of which counterbalances an anticipated 20-30% decrease in office space and 50% decrease in retail values; in Scott's words, "we're in the new normal;"
* Gotham Nutmegger Jane Beddall described her transformative mediation business model, which strives to resolve disputes, particularly with respect to issues involving shared assets;
* Gotham Queens Group Coordinator Dan Schwartz addressed the increased demand for office technology leasing equipment and software in both virtual office settings and brick-and-mortar services, including hospitals and food industries;
* GPB members Carmine Goncalves and Vince Chirico provided updates in the legal industry, including increased use of virtual court proceedings and other new trends, prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic, likely leading to a transformation in the way people think about business, our frequent special visitor - former NYPD Inspector and current Assistant District Attorney Manny Batista - enlightened the group on prosecution of social distancing offenses and new procedures in place at the Civilian Complaint Review Board, and Carmine Goncalves spoke about increased collaboration between personal injury practitioners;
* Manhattan Business Breakfast Group member Stephanie Shalofsky of The Organizing Zone described the transformation of her business to meet the growth in demand for virtual organizing services and the creation of dedicated work spaces at home;
* New Gothamite (Business Breakfast Group) and financial planner Benjamin DeAngelis spoke about the growth in socially-responsible investing.
All that, in less than 90 minutes. Having made new friendships, I very much look forward to riding the virtual circuit to next week's Real Estate and Nutmegger meetings. In return, we welcome circuit riders and guests to our June 24 joint meeting with the Business Breakfast Group. And of course please join us for our weekly Raj Goel Virtual Happy Hours on Fridays throughout May at 5:00 p.m. - my glasses are already lined up.
Many thanks to Group Chair Corey Bearak, whose constant leadership and guidance has helped lead Gotham into the world of virtual networking opportunities, the many benefits of which serve as consolation from the forced cancellation of various annual Gotham rites such as our golf outing, Mets-Yankees subway series baseball, and battle of the bands.
And of course none of this would be possible without Nancy Schess' leadership and her "drive-by" Zoom scheduling/connection prowess.
Thanks everyone for a great meet.
