Gotham – Mainstream churches and synagogues are being challenged with reduced attendance and large, beautiful and historic homes that service the congregation at major holidays but not at other times.  Rethinking the way in which the congregation uses its historic building can give new life to the congregation as well as to the building.

Lari Schwartz’s congregation in Jersey City is hosting a discussion of the Revitalization and Adaptive Reuse of Historic Houses of Worship for Community Development that will address just this issue.  Gotham’s own Joshua Zinder will be speaking there as well, discussing his work for Lari’s synagogue –

The challenge faced by many municipalities is how existing historic cultural and community assets can be reinvented to serve a broader community purpose and become an amenity to the neighborhood to meet needs of today and future generations.

Attendees will hear from congregation and community leaders as to how Temple Beth-El, an almost 150 year old congregation, is  currently transforming and adaptively reusing their historic sanctuary and converting it into a multi-use community space that will include a school, social area, food pantry, art installation gallery and performance space.
Join us for opening remarks by Mayor Steven Fulop, a moderated panel discussion and presentation featuring Tanya Marione, Jersey City Planning Director and Josh Zinder of Landua Zinder, AIA-NJ President and Project Architect for Temple Beth- El , and an optional historical tour of the building by Hon. Irwin Rosen.
