This was definitely a movie that needed to be seen on a big screen. What makes this film special is that the cinematography tells a story. I think he chose black and white to emphasize the drabness of every one's life and the grittiness of 1971 Mexico, In one image the director tied the whole thing together-- late in the film when the mother takes the kids to a seaside hotel to tell them about their father, you have a single frame with a wedding in the background with the desolate look at a woman who lost her baby and a family that had lost their father. I find that kind of visual story telling extremely powerful, and that was only one of them.
