Last Month I shared what happened when I joined an informal breakfast meeting that "convened” as an outgrowth of a Gotham Long Island Women (please find that account included below my email signature in case you missed it or need a "refresh”). And it’s been on a “to do” list to share an update. Here goes:
So I further connected with the colleague of the businessman I knew who I ran into while informally breakfasting. First at the special event and then we met for Coffee (me) and Tea (him) at a venue downstairs from my Central Labor Council meeting last month. Further meetings to follow. I also connected him to my Assembly Member with whom he shares a interest in a specific policy area — and of course they already spoke.
And I brought a good friend (with whom I play ball 2x/ week) who is a franchise consultant and business broker to the event featuring the two L.I. county executives. I introduced him to the host and he already reported on a meeting with the host’s daughter, an attorney. At the same event I met the incoming Suffolk Police Commissioner and shared a community policing plan I developed during my last time in government (and of course the Suffolk County exec wanted to see it too.) Always a great utility to have things to offer to build relationships not based the “usual stuff” involved in dealing with office holders. (In other words, your “record” helps open doors unrelated to that record and enables you to help others — including clients.
…..and there may be a Part III

Wednesday morning I attended an informal Gotham women’s breakfast on Long Island.
When I first read the Nancy Schess post as moderator for Fredslist I thought I missed knowing about a scheduled meeting of LI Women.
Not exactly.
It was an informal get together — no rules, no format — that allowed people to attendees to let their hair down (if they so choose).
I realized that when I RSVP’d.
I was the only attendee of my agenda but there was almost another.
We gathered at an unusual location for Gotham, the Hicksville Diner.
By the way, we enjoyed excellent service.
One attendee — despite my attending many meeting of LI and LI Women, some joint with my “home” LI Legal group, shared that the breakfast offered an opportunity to know me better. A takeaway that this “sharing” offers — look at a few more one on one other smaller 2-4, maybe five person meets where you get to know others in the tribe a bit better. Sometimes you may think a person knows you but for whatever reason the registration level perhaps fell short of mutuality. Most likely just one or the other needed to take another step but neither quite realized it.
But even beyond the Gotham angle, but still Gotham remained the only reason I found myself at a diner in Hicksville that morning, a businessman I know through politics and got to know a but better through advising a political figure, sat down at an adjoining booth; we noticed each other and exchange pleasantries while I remained with my Gotham Party. Next thing I know, he texts me about an event he organized next week featuring appearances by both Nassau and Suffolk County Execs.
After our Gotham gathering finally breaks up, I go over as he is now joined by a guest. He introduces us. We connect. And expect this correspondent to add more to this account at a later date.
So another benefit of Gotham, it puts you in the right place even when you expect it not at all.
Thank you Gotham!
