[Fredslist] Marjorie Stoneman Douglas and this National tragedy

Hello Gotham:

I am a resident of Parkland, Florida.  Both of my daughters recently graduated Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which is literally located across the street from my community.  My neighbors, the Montaltos, lost their 15-year-old daughter to this terrible act of violence.  I just returned from her funeral services.  I have been to 3 vigils, and I just returned from Gainesville, where I drove 5 hours each way, just so I could hug my two girls.  As you can imagine, this incident not only affects the families of the victims, but their community as well.  Parkland & Coral Springs are deeply mourning this event and it is going to be a very long time until even the slightest sense of normalcy will return.

I am watching these amazing students rising up to make positive changes.  They are going to Tallahassee today, over 100 strong, to sit in on the new gun bills that are being debated.  They are reaching out on social media to gather funds to assist the families.  They are calling out for change.  Not just gun laws, or mental health, but to see if the government can put in place some laws to protect them in school, as well as a clear-cut method to report and possible defuse any other aberrant behaviors or anti-social social media posting.  They want to affect change, both immediately as well as long term solutions to these social issues.

Please add to their voices, reach out to our lawmakers to ask for their assistance in making our children safer.  I do not have any answers, and I would appreciate this organization, with all their resources and brilliant minds to see if we can open a dialogue of good, implementable ideas for both the immediate future (protecting our children) and long term (gun control, mental health).  I too am searching for answers as is my community.

Please, let's not get caught up in political debates, this is a higher calling.  Good ideas, suggestions or solutions is what we need, not rhetoric.
