At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions a few weeks ago and broadcast over the weekend on HBO David Letterman shared the wonders of live music while inducting Pearl Jam.  This correspondent adamantly agrees!

As a judge with Rachel Abeshouse, David Mack, Odey Raviv and Hilary Spiegel, I found it really hard to pick a winner, a second and third at the LIVE 5th Annual Gotham Battle of the Bands® presented by Jason Greenberg of The Phoenix Public Adjusters Group, Inc. at the legendary Cafe Wha? — made available by co-owner William Skody — yesterday in Greenwich Village.

Six really great bands competed and while we only could pick three, William Skody agreed that all six proved worthy of their own gig at Cafe Wha?  (We only promise a gig to the winner!).  That demonstrates the amazing talent curated by a select Gotham Committee led by Norm Spizz and featuring this correspond, Fred Klein, Dana Charlton,  our videographer Cayce Crown, Odey Raviv, Sonia Saleh, William Skody and our "doormen,” Mike Jakobs, and Mike Steger (also assisted by Dan Hochler).

Besides the generous (Jason) Greenberg and our “Global (all events) Gotham Sponsors Raj Goel of Brainlink and Tom Gallin of John Gallin and sons, Gotham also thanks Curt Arnel and Associates, Cafe Wha?, Carriage Trade Insurance Agency, Dee Stags, Gran Print (All band and committee members and Cafe Wha? staff got Ken's beautiful tees; see them following the videos below.), S.C. Horn Associates, John Gallin & Son, Klein, Zelman, Rothermel, Jacobs & Schess, Minuteman Press of Bellerose, Organic Harmony Music Management, Skody Scot & Company CPAs P.C., Law Offices of Michael D. The bands in order of appearance: Upstate Rubdown, Yeah Whatever, A Royal Crime, The Offshoots, Parkway South and Off The Record.

Bottom line: if you missed it, you missed a great festival of music; Gotham succeeded where those Fyre failed and miserably so!   I even turned on a young Pedal Steel Guitar player to Poco’s first three LPs so he can expand his horizons on the use of that instrument.  No date next year yet but mark your calendar for a musical Sunday next Spring in March or April to ensure you make it.
