How to Successfully Represent an Asylum Seeker: Pro Bono Attorney Training
Hosted by Kane Street Synagogue
This training is generously hosted by Kane Street Synagogue, a participating
congregation in HIAS’ Welcome Campaign. Kane Street Synagogue is an egalitarian, Conservative community in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn that is dedicated to Chesed U'Mishpat, acts of loving kindness and the pursuit of justice.
Registration
A volunteer application is required of all training participants. Please fill out HIAS’ online pro bono attorney application or for further information, contact Jonathon.Orta at hias.org.
About Pro Bono with HIAS
Pro bono attorneys receive case referrals that have been thoroughly screened by an experienced legal professional and accepted by HIAS for representation. Training opportunities are available, usually for CLE credit. Each volunteer is matched with a mentor familiar with the case who is available as needed to orient the pro bono attorney, answer questions, and review briefs and filings. Sample materials are available including a training manual upon request. HIAS also provides access to our network of volunteer interpreters and translators.
HIAS is the global Jewish nonprofit that protects refugees—including women and children, and ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities—whose lives are in danger for being who they are. Guided by our values and history, HIAS helps refugees rebuild their lives in safety and advocates to ensure that all displaced people are treated with dignity. More info at @HIASrefugees, Facebook and hias.org.
Experienced legal advocates will present on the fundamentals of asylum law and how to effectively prepare an asylum application, legal argument, declaration and supporting evidence.
