I never had the honor of meeting Welles. But I had the honor of helping to create the Gotham giving campaign which proudly supported charities over the last 6 years. The first award was given to Welles Remy Crowther Foundation and the Red Bandana.
Watching Jeff's reaction to the announcement at the Xmas cocktail party that night as the first recipient still cannot be well described. I had never been more moved and so touched that our efforts would honor the memory of someone whose bravery and sacrifice allowed and continues to allow other lives to flourish for generations to come.
Several years later I was asked to write about the Gotham giving campaign and my experience that first year. As serendipity would again intervene, it was on Mother's Day.
Honoring a son whose supreme sacrifice torched a hole in a mother's soul cannot be filled by words but certainly can be lifted with action. While I do not think I did it justice, it seared in my soul and as serendipity does, Welles has left his legacy there too. He deserves no less. His family deserves that too.
On the eve of 9/11 I proudly wear a red Bandana to honor Welles and his family. I will carry it through out the week and I invite Gotham members to honor a Gotham son in the same way.
