[Fredslist] New ID requirements for flying domestically

Hello:
Just want to make everyone aware of a new restriction going into place (Thanks Brian Weiss for the reminder)...

A while ago, the REAL ID act went into effect, raising the requirements for personal ID. It includes access to government facilities and TSA at the airports.

Ultimately, the US Department of Homeland Security is requiring that all state-issued drivers' licenses must include "machine-readable technology" or chips to mitigate the number of air and cruise passengers using counterfeit forms of ID to pass through security.

If you've replaced your driver's license recently, you will notice it has a chip and a hologram.

There's been a lot of back and forth on the deadline for each state. Some deadlines apply only to access to federal facilities, NOT air travel. You can click on this link to check the status of your state.

For New Yorkers, the deadline was extended to October 10, 2016. That means, if you use your driver's license as your primary form of ID when you travel, you may need to have one of the new licenses by that date. (Again, the timetable may change and air travel may not be affected).

If you don't want to swap out your license, you can still travel with your passport as ID. Just make sure that your name on your ticket exactly matches your name on your ID, including any middle names or initials. Some of the airlines are crazy when it comes to mismatches, misspelled names, missing letters, etc. and charge ridiculous fees to have tickets corrected.

If you are going to be renewing your passport soon, you can also apply for a passport card, in addition to the book. That passport card (sized like a credit card) can be used for ID when travelling within the United States.
