[Fredslist] What can one ask and not ask when checking a job candidate's references on behalf of a client?

We have presented 2 candidates to Philips for a rather senior position based in Shanghai. The Philips HR person based in China has asked us to get references for them. One is employed in the US and is a Chinese national, the other is working in China, is a US citizen as well as a permanent resident of Hong Kong.

As a New York City and US business are there any questions we cannot ask the references the candidates supply us with?

Thanks very much. I tried to find the answer on line but failed.

Best regards,

RS
