The Opposite of Networking Is Not Working

Write this quote down and put it on your computer monitor. Every time you meet someone, you have the opportunity to learn from them or to be a resource to them. It is all about giving first. I like to live by this quote that I made up. Look at it each morning and start the day with a goal in mind of how to put it into practice.

Here is an example: I got a call one morning from Eric, who is someone I had worked with several years before as a participant in a workshop. He remembered me and had now moved into a new position. Turns out he was also looking for a new apartment, and I had just spoken to a friend in the business who was describing a place that almost seemed perfect for him. I connected the two. Several months later, he moved, though not to the first apartment but to another my contact showed him. He then introduced her to three other friends who have all become her clients. I was thrilled[md]all because I think with a networking mindset.

You might be wondering, did it come back? Remember not to keep score, because things do come back down the road. Eric did in fact have me work with his new company and then introduced me to two other friends, and I have worked for them as well.

So, yes, your network will expand and grow, just as you want it to. However, you must give and be willing to give and let the relationship grow first.
