Listen Up Philip
Opens Oct. 17th at IFC Center
323 Sixth Ave.
As prickly up-and-coming New York author Philip Lewis Friedman (Jason Schwartzman) awaits the inevitable success of his second novel, he feels increasingly alienated from his crumbling relationship with photographer girlfriend Ashley (Elisabeth Moss). When a Roth-ish idol (Jonathan Pryce) offers his isolated summer home as a refuge, Philip retreats deeper into himself as his life, and those of everyone around him, spiral quickly out of control. Perry’s ambitious literary comedy marks him as a talent to watch. Co-starring Krysten Ritter. Music Events

London Philharmonic Orchestra
Oct. 16th at 8:00 P.M. at Carnegie Hall
881 7th Ave.
The Times (London) said that the sound of the Jean-Efflam Bavouzet’s fingers “is distinctive. It is searching, penetrating, imaginatively fired.” Those fingers will be put to the test in Rachmaninoff’s spectacular Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The composer weaves Paganini’s immortal theme with the traditional Latin Dies Irae into one of the most brilliant sets of variations ever written. Magnus Lindberg’s Chorale reflects on a Bach chorale in a series of highly imaginative variations. Shostakovich’s massive Symphony No. 8, written in 1943 when the Nazis were in retreat, is not a Soviet victory anthem, but a sober meditation streaked with a sense of foreboding. Food & Drink

Max Fish
Oct. 1st-Oct. 31st
120 Orchard St.
Max Fish (which held court on Ludlow Street for 24 years before succumbing to high rents and closing in 2013) is returning and it is a very welcome return indeed. Ulli Rimkus has reopened at 120 Orchard St., a few blocks from the original. The new Fish is less of a couloir and more of an open rectangle, with the same vinyl couches intact. Fishies will notice a new DJ booth and some better booze, but the most obvious difference is a seated bar downstairs for busy nights and music performances. Marc, Harry, and Shannon are still behind the bar, and the hot skaters and off-duty models still roam the place. Cultural Arts

Once
Oct. 1st-Oct. 31st at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre
242 W. 45th St.
Guy is an Irish singer and songwriter who spends his days fixing vacuums in the Dublin shop he runs with his father, and his nights playing his music in local pubs. He is on the verge of giving up music altogether when a Czech immigrant, “Girl,” walks into the bar, hears him play and refuses to let him abandon his guitar. Winner of 8 Tony Awards, the play has something of the feel of a pub concert, and every effort is made to give the audience an intimate evening with the characters. Before the show, the actors, who are also the show’s musicians, play Irish standards in the Dublin pub set, and audience members are invited to join them for a drink from the onstage bar. Assembled Realities: Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao's New York
Oct. 15th-Oct. 31st at the Museum of the City of New York
1220 Fifth Ave.
This exhibit features more than 40 works by this Taiwanese artist, who came to New York at 18 to study photography. Pushing the boundaries of traditional documentary photography, Liao creates large-scale panoramas by combining multiple exposures of the same location taken over the course of several hours. The resulting composite photographs are often fantastical; complex, hyper-real views that no single shot—or the eye—could capture. Liao has spent the past decade honing his distinctive style, making images of his adopted city from the Grand Concourse to Coney Island, the old Shea Stadium to the 72nd Street Subway. A truly unique perspective on our City. Blood Manor
Oct. 1st-Oct. 31st
163 Varick St.
If nightmares of Freddy Krueger, Chucky, or Dracula have ever kept you up at night, you’ll be bound to lose some sleep after visiting Blood Manor. Goblins, clowns, zombies and other nasties lurk in this haunted house’s 5,000 square feet of bone-chilling twists and turns. This year’s Blood Manor features a 3D maze and eerily themed rooms like “Hannibal’s Kitchen,” the “Banquet of Horror” and the “Wolf’s Den.” Blood Manor is definitely not your standard kid-based haunted house. This is not for the faint of heart!
