Cleary Larkin, AIA, an associate at Beyer Blinder Belle, will discuss her work on the restoration of the Beacon Theatre, a New York City interior landmark, re-opened in 2009. Originally billed as the "Little Roxy," the Beacon Theatre's architectural decoration was characteristic of 1920's gilded movie palaces; however, years of overpainting and simplified maintenance had camouflaged the original details of the theatre, discovered as part of BBB's extensive research and existing conditions examination. Ms. Larkin's work at the Beacon Theatre was a full-scale interior restoration that encompassed acoustical, lighting and infrastructure upgrades, as well as restoration of complex historic finishes and artwork. Ms. Larkin will present an in-depth look into the restoration process and the history of the Beacon Theatre's evolution from neighborhood movie theatre to its current use as a premier rockhouse venue.
Ms. Larkin joined Beyer Blinder Belle in 2007 upon completion of her graduate degree in Historic Preservation at Columbia University. As an integral member of BBB's Historic Preservation team, she has worked on other notable historic and landmark projects that include the Empire State Building, the Morgan Library & Museum, Grand Central Terminal, and Brooklyn Navy Yard. Prior to moving to New York, Ms. Larkin worked for an architectural and planning firm in Virginia. Her expertise also includes research and writing for Historic Structures Reports, National Register nominations, and Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit applications.
