Warren,

Computer viruses are like the common cold or pneumonia.
At some point, you are going to get hit, and you need to plan for it.
If you walk out in shorts and t-shirts in a blizzard, you know you’re going to get hit.
If you wear proper clothes, walk carefully, avoid ice, broken glass and exposed pipes, you’ll be much better off.

Same common sense rules apply on the internet.

                You need multi-layer defense.

Really good onsite & offsite backups

                Good Antivirus
                Managed firewalls
                Good SPAM filtering
                Blocking flash/java/ads on the desktop

And a really good digital doctor, err, IT consultant, who’s job it is to manage your IT.

This is not something most non-IT experts can do.

The same way I can’t diagnose heart disease or treat cancer…or change the oil in my car.

If IT is important to your business, then treat that asset with the care it deserves.

If your data is replaceable or low value, use a cheap padlock (low-grade antivirus, consumer-grade backups)
If your data is medium value, use better locks (UTMs, managed antivirus, commercial backups, managed spam filters)
If your data / business is worth a lot, buy a safe & armed guards. (managed firewalls, managed desktops, managed servers, managed security, managed av, etc).

Robert,

With cryptolocker, you have exactly 2 choices:

1) Pay the ransom within the 3 days and get your files back

OR

2) Restore from backup

If you have already “cleaned” the infection, then your files are irrevocably lost.
There is NO cleanup for Cryptolocker.

Going forward, your best defense is secure, redundant backups.

Got hit by the virus cryptolocker last night. Have contained the virus through malwarebytes anti malware but NEED to find a program that will unevenly our files encrypted by this malicious virus.

Please share any information you have with me and my computer support Anthony Marotta. I copied him on this email.

Thank you Gothamites
