Take a walk through this much fabled but endangered quarter. Known for its LGBT, African American & immigrant heritage, and Bohemian history, the South Village is a neighbor to Greenwich Village, East Village, SoHo and NoHo. The South Village has been home to a merchant class, a prominent African American district and to immigrants. By the 1920s, artists, bohemians, and radical thinkers began to populate the area and the institutions which served them, such as jazz clubs and speakeasies became commonplace throughout the area. What was probably the city's first visible gay community also found a home in the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
