Secretly recorded audio diaries and telephone calls with Cash from the 1960s and 1970s reveal a brand new side of the legendary singer. My Father and the Man In Black, tells the inside story of 'bad boy' Johnny Cash, his talented but troubled manager, Saul Holiff, and a son searching for his father in the shadow of a legend. Jonathan Holiff's new documentary is more than just another addition to the bottomless pit of archival footage dedicated to legend, man, myth and the flawed mortal that was Johnny Cash. This film is a universal and troubling tale of the very real walls that parents can build around themselves. James Turrell
Sept. 1st-Sept. 25th at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
1071 Fifth Ave. [View on Map] <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001digDrGusB43l1pQA68BKLO3wwfivZD46n8IrzJBxO6KRfnsu8QEz3PQ_VgAbBxCzotghKd5GQ_rzcTVKLPpjEHtHynqUKl45pzHOjWbgmz7B_qtwZG9mgwXuq4CCnqCz> [4 Train] [6 Train] [6 Train]
James Turrell's first exhibition in New York since 1980 focuses on the artist's groundbreaking explorations of perception, light, color, and space with a special focus on the role of site specificity in his practice. At its core is Aten Reign (2013), a major new project that recasts the Guggenheim rotunda as an enormous volume filled with shifting artificial and natural light. One of the most dramatic transformations of the museum ever conceived, the installation reimagines Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic architecture-its openness to nature, graceful curves, and magnificent sense of space. Reorienting visitors' experiences of the rotunda from above to below, Aten Reign gives form to the air and light occupying the museum's central void, proposing an entirely new experience of the building. This exhibition will include approximately 63 drawings and paintings by self-taught Alabama artist Bill Traylor. An irresistible play from the most peculiar of fictitious premises - an underemployed Los Angeles actor goes to work in Barbra Streisand's Malibu basement - allowing the playwright to ruminate with delicious wit and perspicacity on the solitude of celebrity, and the melancholy that lurks beneath narcissism. In the capable hands of the director Stephen Brackett and the wickedly charming actor Michael Urie, this seriously funny slice of absurdist whimsy creates the illusion of a stage filled with multiple people, all of them with their own droll point of view.
