[Fredslist] Need Advice for Tablet Purchase

From another Phyllis:
I would  also like advice on use of tablets for work more than entertainment. I am an Apple devotee and am choosing between the new iPad and iPad mini.

 I am looking for something that I can conveniently carry  but still be able to work on documents even when not connected to the Internet.
 
Can I use a flash drive with a tablet?  I  would consider also purchasing a keyboard for it. Is there a keyboard available for the iPad mini?
 
Any advice, experience or recommendations?
