Environmental Specialist/Environmental Projects Coordinator

Duties: In consultation with Project Manager the Environmental Specialist/Environmental Project Coordinator will have overall responsibility of project coordination and oversight for our environmental projects. They will include the following tasks:

 

·       Environmental Justice Project-- Plan, schedule, conduct, coordinate and implement project activities which include supervision of project interns; organizing and facilitating project workgroups; working with University consultants; governmental agency outreach; organizing/facilitating community outreach and informational meetings, forums, summits, etc.; researching, gathering and analyzing environmental and health-related data; conducting, analyzing environment and project-related surveys; analyzing, assessing, drafting and presenting comments for Environmental Impact Statements, hearings, and other environmental situations where such action is appropriate;  monitoring compliance with and requirement for community notifications on environmental projects coming into Southeast Queens; helping to plan community mobilization strategies on key environmental justice issues; completion of project documents.

·       Jamaica Bay/Waterfront Project (Idlewild Trail Building Project)--Have overall responsibility of project coordination and oversight, including the legality and completeness of contracts awarded to architectural and construction firms; ensure that all terms of contracts are completed in a timely manner and according to specifications.

·      Environmental Education Project/Design--schedule and implement educational and other programmatic activities; supervise project interns in the planning, writing, and adapting hands-on, inquiry-based curricula; create media and implement appropriate community outreach; plan, maintain and make accessible the fauna/flora exhibit area;

 

Where: EQA Office, Idlewild Park Preserve

 

Qualifications: B.S. or M.S. in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology or related field with concentrations in Environmental Justice and/or Public Health. Preference given to those with post-graduate degree in environmental management, environmental and/or social justice or related fields along with strong desire to work with a variety of people. Must have strong organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including general and technical writing ability, and high level of self-motivation, enthusiasm, and initiative.  Candidate must have the ability to effectively work on and lead teams as well as work independently. Preference given to those with prior experience successfully coordinating projects and working with/managing others in a collaborative environment.
