I often start my elevator speech with the phrase "make a difference in people's live.
That's what happens when you support Gotham's Summer of Giving. Your donation at a Gotham meeting (passing the envelope does work) or on line (http://www.gothamfoundation.org/) truly helps people.
When donating last year (not sure how many times and business cards), I selected a charity supported by the Order Knights of Pythias ("K of P"), a fraternal organization that was the first of its kind to receive a charter under an act of the U.S. Congress "after careful investigation by then-President Abraham Lincoln.
The "K of P" or Pythians as we go by, follow three distinguishing principles Friendship, Charity and Benevolence. Our Grand Lodge this past year adopted the moniker, "We Help People."
This Queens boy belongs to a local Pythian lodge based in Brooklyn (not the reason I a co-chair the BPBG). One of the core charities we support is Juvenile Diabetes ("JD") through our own, Diabetes Research Association (DRA). I first learned about JD riding my stingray to visit my maternal grandparents at their Oakland Gardens (Bayside) apartment. Their neighbor had a young daughter who I learned had JB. Before I graduated college, she passed. Always bugged me when we lose someone young who would otherwise face a bright future. I also felt for the parents losing a child.
So when my order adopted JD as a charity I embraced it. As with Gotham, 100% of what the order collects for JD goes to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). We run a golf outing, hold "Shake a cans" and solicit other Pythian lodges.
Gotham made a difference in supporting JD through the DRA and other charities, some outlined in other commentaries that preceded mine.
Help Gotham make a difference this year as we try to do even more.

It has been suggested that past Summer of Giving Recipients post something on fredslist to give life and testify to the benefits bestowed upon their chosen 501 c 3. I think this is a good suggestion and welcome contributions. Thanks.
