Tribe,

The importance of this ingenious document first came to me as a student visiting Checkpoint Charlie 9n 1966 long before
the Berlin Wall fell. I was a political science/French major on a student year abroad program. We were told by dictatorial
military guards: what we  could say, who we could  speak to (no personal conversation with locals except for purchase
transactions), where we could go; moreover, cameras were stored until our return; violators had their cameras
and film confiscated. East Berlin looked like a Edward Hopper black & white painting: drab, stark in its absence of
vitality, little or no merchandise in soul-lesswindow displays, no mannequins, no imagination. The one department store
permitted was an exercise in futile sameness -  no color, no choice, no cash registers ringing, no laughter. I didn't need a
camera. I got the picture.

Until one has lived in a government controlled society, one may never fully understand or appreciate the extraordinary
rights and blessings conferred by the Declaration of Independence.

Happy Fourth!

>Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated,
>but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. <image003.jpg>Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter andtrader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.  He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.
