Subject: [Fredslist] Summer of Giving Winner--December 2010-Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center-Fred's Team
Hello Gotham.
As many of you know, I have been a runner with Fred’s Team since 2002 and have raised over $100,000 for Cancer Research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I have completed 16 marathons (26.2 mile races) including running the NYC marathon 8 times and finishing many half marathons and 10K’s On average we have 800 runners each year running on my team raising money for Cancer Research. I have recruited other Gotham members over the years to also run or volunteer with Fred’s Team. So many of you have donated and supported me. I am running the NYC Marathon in November so you could feel free and go to my home page at http://mskcc.convio.net/site/TR/FredsTeamEvents/Freds_Team?px=1758467&pg=personal&fr_id=1730
Back on December of 2010, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer was one of 2 charities that received the Summer of Giving funds from Gotham. I was extremely surprised and honored that my charity was chosen. I recall, I wasn’t able to attend the cocktail party 2 years ago and Fred kept asking me to go and change my original plans. We all know how persuasive Fred could be if he wants you to attend an event so I was able to change my plans.
I had no idea that The Summer of Giving was going to be announced that night and that Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center would be chosen to receive funds. When Nancy and Fred announced Memorial Sloan, I was so shocked and honored to be chosen. We all know individuals who have suffered or are suffering from Cancer. We know survivors or remember those who didn’t make it. I have so much gratitude that the $4500 Memorial Sloan Kettering received from the Summer of Giving goes directly to Cancer Research.
We have many charities in Gotham. As you sit around the table in your groups, talk about charities that mean something to you. Share your personal stories on why the charity or organization is important and the type of help it needs. We all could do what we can to help various charities. It is amazing that the council set up the Gotham Foundation and Summer of Giving program. This gives an amazing opportunity each year for one of you to be surprised to get extra funds for your charity. I was surprised 2 years ago. This year one of you may be surprised as well!!
So please give what you feel comfortable with at your next meeting and include your charity of choice in the envelop. Now you could also go on-line to make a donation at the summer of giving and also nominate a charity of your choice. It is that simple!!
Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!!!
