Edwin Gould Services for Children & Families
STEPS to End Family Violence

Rikers Services Coordinator, Alternatives to Incarceration Program

STEPS To End Family Violence is dedicated to empowering families and communities through innovative strength-based programs that promote healing and social change. We are a progressive community organization that values justice and diversity.

STEPS to End Family Violence (STEPS) is a program of Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families. Founded 26 years ago with a staff of 2, STEPS now reaches over 5,000 New Yorkers each year through a variety of programming focused on the prevention of gender-based violence, as well as advocacy and healing for the survivors of such violence. Our cornerstone program is an Alternatives to Incarceration program, unique in the country, which works with survivors arrested on charges related to their histories of abuse. We have expanded since then, allowing us to provide a full range of holistic services to survivors of abuse, including the Relationship Abuse Prevention Program (RAPP); the Teen Accountability Program; and clinical and civil legal programs for adult, teen, and child survivors of abuse.

Position Summary

The ATI program works with survivors of gender-based violence who have been arrested on charges related to their history of abuse. We work with the legal system in designing an alternative to her incarceration; providing group and individual counseling in our Downtown Brooklyn and East Harlem office locations as well as the Rose M. Singer Center (women’s jail) on Rikers Island; and court compliance among other services. We also partner with attorneys to provide defense-based advocacy services that include writing psycho-social reports, pre-pleading or pre-sentencing memoranda, investigation, and trial preparation. The Rikers Services Coordinator will be responsible for the coordination of our Rikers-based services at the Rose M. Singer Center. This involves liaising with the Department of Correction as well as coordinating staff and intern facilitation of several client groups, oversight of group curriculum development, collaborative programming with other service providers, and coordinating three events at the Rose M. Singer Center each year. In addition to coordinating the provision of ATI’s Rikers-based services, the candidate will maintain a caseload and provide counseling and advocacy services to incarcerated clients. The position reports to the ATI Program Coordinator.
